    Smooth barrel nut removal

So I am having some trouble. I have a new 260 rem barrel from Apache. I finally got all the things needed to switch the barrel and some extra time to do it. The only problem I'm having is that I have a stupid smooth barrel nut. I've been trying to get it off for awhile without it budging. I don't want to mess it up too much because I don't have a back up nut. I couldn't find anyone that had an extra in stock. Is there a special trick to getting them off? I'm to the point of just buying a pipe wrench and worrying about looks later. Any help is appreciated

Put a little heat to it.

The problem I had was that the wrench kept sliding. Even though I tightened it down as much as possible. I do have a heat gun I might try too.

Id put a little heat to it and use the pipe wrench and order a new nut and replace it when you get it.

I didn't think about replacing it later. I guess I was just too frustrated to think clearly. Well a pipe wrench and my heat gun will be in the plans tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it out to shoot by Saturday

If you have the smooth barrel nut wrench I would use the rosin brownells sells to stop wrenches from slipping and galling the part.

Try a strap wrench with a little powdered sugar and a thin piece of paper between strap and paper. That should give enough grip for the wrench to hold.

Submit a WTB ad in the classifieds, maybe someone has some extras. Check with NSS also.

The pipe wrench with a heat gun worked beautifully. It didn't mess up the nut as much as I figured it would. I got the new barreled installed and put back in the stock only to realize the nut wasn't completely and my headspace has shifted. I guess I get to try it again. Also having trouble getting the ejector off the old head and onto the new. It'll get done tomorrow tho and then sighted in and ready for deer season :)

Don't forget 'righty tighty, lefty loosy' also. Just gotta remember which end of the barrel you are looking at!

I was having a lot of trouble removing mine, until I tried reversing the direction. Problem was, I was relived when the darned nut finally moved, that I forgot to make a note of which direction it turned, but I was standing at the breech end!
