    NOOB Savage owner

I just bought online a Savage model 10P 308 with a 20 inch barrel. I have a Burris FFII scope on the way and some Leupold rings and bases. First bolt gun ever. I'm looking forward to getting it set up and taken to the range. Any helpful advice on getting this range ready?

Feed it quality factory ammunition or handloads.

Here are some simple things you can do for free...

#1 - check for barrel and rear safety tang free-float. The barrel AND rear tang need to be free-floated. If you find any places in those areas which are not, you can easily relieve them (or - if you don't fee comfortable with doing that, get a local gun smith who can).

#2 - make sure your action bolts are not over/under tightened. The 10P come with a factory plastic stock (not the best for accuracy). Take the rifle and hold it vertical with muzzle up. Loosen the action screws (front most and then the one immediately behind it and typically in the front of the trigger guard). Using an inch pound torque wrench, set the front to 25# and the rear to 22-25# (remember INCH #s - not FOOT #s!).

#3 - check the scope ring bases and rings for proper torque.

#4 - (mentioned earlier) be sure to use quality (consistent) factory ammo, or - better yet - load your own and find what she likes (but you'll have to do that at the range, so this is kinda an "also to-do")

Good shootin' and all the best!

    Welcome.
Be sure and see if your FF2 qualifies for the current rebates from Burris :)
Maybe a few more $ for ammo.
