Boyds Stock for 116 Trophy Hunter XP?

I have two Trophy Hunter XP's. Both 1 year old. When I go onto boyds website and try to look at which one I need it gets a bit confusing.


.270 and .30-06 , both have the bottom bolt release button with detachable magazine. Neither one has the metal plate for attachment, these are more like the axis in how the magazines connect.

Which style do I need for these rifles? It says I may need an aftermarket metal bottom if it's an XP version yet these rifles are similar to the Axis in how the magazines connect. These are not like my fathers Savage 111 which has the metal box magazine release clip.

Has anyone put a boyds stock on a newer Savage 116 Trophy Hunter XP?

You will need a Boyd's Savage LA (111, 114, 116), Center Feed Stock with DBM inletting. You will need to order a plastic LA DBM frame assembly (surround) from Savage Arms Parts to get the Axis-style magazine with plastic bottom cap to latch into a wood stock. Savage started molding the DBM frame assembly into the Trophy Hunter plastic stock a couple of years ago to cut cost. You might also want to order a metal bottom bolt release trigger guard to replace the plastic one. The 1st picture below shows a Savage SA plastic DBM frame assembly (surround) in a wood stock with a metal bottom bolt release trigger guard.

If you want to switch to all metal bottom parts, you will need a METAL LA DBM frame assembly and METAL bottom cap. The latch system is different from the plastic Axis-style bottom parts. See 2nd picture which shows a metal SA frame assembly (surround) and metal bottom cap in a Boyd's Tacticool stock. I believe Jim a Northland Shooter Supply keeps most of these parts in stock if you want to give him a call.

Do you think it may be possible to remove the plastic one from my factory stock? It appears to not be glued in on the sides at least.

If possible I would use those first and eventually upgrade to the metal version. I'm just worried about the cost all at once with the two stock.

I'm not sure if the plastic DBM frame assembly can be removed from the current TH stock. Contact Savage Arms parts to find out the cost of the plastic DBM frame assembly. I don't think they are very expensive. If I remember correctly, the plastic DBM frame assembly and bottom cap cost around $30.00. You don't need the bottom cap, since your current Axis-style DBM will work.

Yep, you got lucky. I am pretty sure they don't make them like that anymore. I am thinking you got an older one that has been sitting in someone's inventory for a while. On the otherhand, you never really can know for sure what you're gonna get from Savage. I the past, anyhow, particularly when struggling financially, they had an MO of "using what they got", "making do" and putting odd parts together to make whatever they can get out the door. I don't mind. It's just part of being Savage. It is also of a part what makes them so inexpensive. :)
