    Pillar bedding question

I've been hiding for some time. Guess you could say this is my first real post. I have two savages. One is a preaccutrigger 110 243 and I have a newer 10 308.

I've bedded the recoil lug on the 243. It is in a wood stock. The biggest question I have as far as pillar bedding is how do I determine the length of the pillars. I have a fair understanding of drilling the holes out to accept the pillars but not quite sure how to determine proper length. When I do this I'll probably do a full bed job leaving the tang floated.

The other question I have is bedding the newer model. The pillar bed the rear pillar I have a tab that holds the mag well in place. What do I do with that? Thanks in advance

I think I measured the length of the existing holes in the stock. After building the pillars I mounted them to the action and bedded the pillars and the stock together. You can wrap tape around a spot on the barrel to center the barrel in the channel and apply tape to the tang. Together they will set the action height along the lines of the stock position, or does any of this make any sense?

That was plan. Taping off the tang to get the clearance I wanted and probably use playdoh under the barrel. If I pillar bed the 243 since the recoil lug is already done I'll probably leave it alone

Before you start the bedding process, install the pillars and action screws while the action is out of the stock. Make sure the rifle bolt will still cycle. As long as the screws catch a 2-3 threads and the bolt cycles, you are good to go.

Thanks. I haven't really shot any groups since I bedded the lug. But I feel like the action screws could be doing a number on the wood.
Group before I bedded the action
