Long tail versus short tail Lyman tang sight on a 99?

I have seen Lyman tang sights with long tails and short tails for a 99.
    What's the scoop?
    Which one will fit a 1928 99 G?

I'll bet Mad Dog has one of each -- and if anyone can answer this, he can!

The long tail is for the older models, as I recall. Mine is the long tail mounting tang, but, the sight is offset to the left (from the shooting position) with adjustment knobs.

First off thanks for this great forum and my apologies for digging up this old thread - but have been searching long vs short tang Lyman peep sight information.
I am wanting to install a tang peep on my inherited 99 to help with my old eyes for hunting

I was lucky enough to find a windage adjustable Lyman 29 1/2 long tang peep sight.
Further research indicated Lyman made a short tang version of this sight.

Can anybody help shed some light as to why Lyman offered the short tang?
Was this for specific models or use with scopes installed?
Is the hole placement the same in the tang or the sight?

Does the short tang version offer any advantages?

Thank you in advance for any help and patience with my dumb questions!

    Thank you!

They both do the same thing, it's just a different variation, maybe they were saving steel. I believe there were actually 3 or 4 different variations of the 29 1/2.
