    Barrel length measurement question ( 82boy answered)


    can someone tell where me to measure to get barrel length? Is it from muzzle to end of shank?

    Technically and legally, it is measured from the bolt face.

    SSS is correct.

    When going for a minimum legal length on a rifle, if you make your barrel 16" on the dot, once you set the headspace it will be over 16" when installed, which is where you want to be. No sense going to jail over a fraction of an inch.

    For what it's worth a brake or flash hider if --permanently-- attached also counts as barrel length. Permanent according to the ATF generally means welded, silver soldered, blind pinned or a combination of those three.
