my brother has a model 99 in 300 savage and we want to reload for it, can we get away with standard dies or will we need small base dies.

Standard should be fine. The 99 I had in 243 cycled great with loads made in standard dies.

I have a couple 99's and none of them have required small base dies.

No problems with my 99s in .250 Savage, .300 Savage, and .358 Winchester using standard dies.
