Just received our family 300 Savage

Just got my family 300 savage the other day, the gun looks exactly as I remember growing up as a small child. The gun has the same bushnell sportview scope I remember, not sure if this was put on by my father or by my grandfather before it was passed on.

The serial number is 349756, and based on what I've researched it looks like a 99EG from 1935, although I'm not sure.

    Man that's Nice with a capital N,
Sure would look good with a Leupold golden ring on it.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.

I should be getting it back from the gunsmith and then I will have to make the decision of whether to replace the scope, or do I want to try and find some old period sights that would match the original history of the gun.

lone...part me agrees...but part of me says this gun put food on the table during very tough times and deserves more. And although I haven't hunted for many, many years, maybe I should chose the road less traveled and put this bad boy back in the woods, aimed at deer where it belongs. In other words, maybe I should be like my grandfather and dad, and less like todays society.

You should. Hunting isn't just about killing. It's about woodscraft, stalking, watching and waiting, camp fraternity, and fine rifles. Tobacco and alcohol often fit into the scenario to a certain degree. Camp fires and camp fire talk is a major part as well. Take that rifle into the woods with some good friends and hunt it. Any animal that you may end up harvesting is icing on the cake.
