    Welcome to SS and enjoy!

Your 110 is a long action Maybe this will help (extract of bolt face diameter's courtesy of JE Customs)

Long actions with a bolt face .DIA of .470 +/-
    220 Swift, 6mm Rem, 240 Weatherby Mag, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Rem,
    6.5x55 Swedish, 270 Win, 7x57 Mauser, 7x64 Brenneke, 280 Rem, 30/06 Springfield,
    8mm Mauser, 338/06 A Square, and the 35 Whelen.

Long actions with a bolt face .Dia of .540 +/-
257 Weatherby, 264 Win Mag, 270 weatherby Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm Weatherby Mag, 7 STW,
    7mm Rem Ultra Mag, 300 H & H, 300 Win Mag, 300 Weatherby Mag, 300 RUM, 303 Brit,
    8mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 340 Weatherby Mag, 338 RUM, 375 H & H, 375 Weatherby,
375 RUM, 416 Rem Mag, 458 Win Mag, and the 458 Lott.

You don't "need" a .300 Win Mag to for a 1000 yard competition unless you want to. You might want to consider the .264, .277, and .284 cals in a non-magnum chamberings; i.e. 6.5x284, 284 Win, .270/AI, .280/AI, etc ...

I have a .270 AI in Savage 110 LA with 30" Lilja SS, 1:8" 3-groove primarily to propel the 165/175 Matrix VLDs. My current accuracy load for the 175 is pushing 2993 FPS.

I truly mean this in a polite manor, by your question you are a long way behind being able to match any guns capabilities at that distance; so have fun and build what ever you like.
I've shot 223's past 1100 for a long time. I currently shoot my 308 and a Creedmoor to a mile. The 308 is a factory barreled FP. The Creedmoor is a Marlin XL7 with a ER Shaw barrel. Load work and trigger control mean WAAAAAYYY more than people want to give them credit for.
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.

can you give us some idea of budget?

For example: $180-200 barrel: Apache Gun Works
$300-500 barrel: Apache or McGowen or Sharp Shooter Supply or Northland Shooter Supply

    $300 Scope: SWFA SS 10x, 16x, 20x ( fixed) or Weaver T-36 36x
    $2,000 Scope: Nightforce?

$100 Trigger: Sharp Shooter Supply Competition Trigger 12oz to 2 lbs
    $150 Trigger: Rifle Basix Sav-2 4 oz - 3 lbs
$200 Trigger: Sharp Shooter Supply Evolution Trigger: $195 (requires additional service of action truing and timing by SSS)

    $100 Stock: Boyds Tacticool
$350 Stock: Sharp Shooter Supply Heavy Bench Rest

What type of competition are you gearing up for? Benchrest? Tactical? F-Class ? High Power Rifle? F-TR? Short Range?

It's a a very broad subject with a huge universe of options and variables. :)

I built a 300 win mag on a Stevens 200 long action. Heavy stainless barrel, JP Tank Brake, Rifle Basix trigger, Millet scope, stiffened the factory stock with epoxy with steel dust in it for filler and a 1/8" diameter fiberglass rod from a fiber optic cable in each side to enhance stiffness. A Harris bipod and the rifle performs better than I can. I have about $1,300 in the rifle and am very happy with it. (that includes the Go-No Gages, I already had an action wrench.)

bare bones minimum for barrel $180 (apache Gun Works) Cartridge of your choice.
bare bones minimum for trigger (less than 1 lb): Sharp Shooter Supply Competition: $104
bare bones minimum variable power tactical scope of any quality: Primary Arms 4-14x44 FFP $230
Bare bones stock: Boyd's Tacticool: $109 (Not a benchrest quality stock) Immediately Available
Quality Benchrest Quality Stock: Sharp Shooter Supply :$350

Total: $630 or $870 depending upon stock.

    Best I can offer.

Good luck. Have fun. Strongly consider Darker's advice, however well delivered. :)

Note: I doubt the 110 action you have will be suitable for the 300 Win Mag. Jim at Apache can advise.

Leupold vx-3 is a high quality hunting scope. Not so sure it has the features needed for tactical or target shooting at various ranges. Namely, parallax adjustable and target turrets (indexed and finger adjustable).

Sorry to hear your luck, but welcome to a fun hobby. Savage is a great place to start and this forum can be exactly what you're looking for as far as help and ideas and encouragement.

To make the most out of it, I would suggest you get a $15 per year paid membership so you have access to members classifieds and a wealth of information in many tech articles.

Foxx, Why could he not build a 300WM from a 110 that was built as a 270? All you gotta do is change over to a .532" LA bolt head and swap out the mag and follower for the 7RM/300WM size box and away you go.

Well, I must be mistaken. I thought magnum cartridges required heavier actions than what the standards use. My bad.

My beef with Leopold's (sub $1300) is they mix and match turrets & reticle, AND have shyte for adjustment range. I am shooting the snot out of the FFP mil/mil Primary Arms scope and loving it! The glass really is better than the SS 3-15. And it has a butt-load of adjustment.

OP. Anyone who tells you "A" cartridge groups better than another, needs a Chuck Norris round-house to the face. This is a hobby, build something that interests you.

If I do decide to go with a 300 WM what barrel length do you recommend ? I was thinking 26 inches

In my opinion, and I'm looking at building a .300 Win Mag for longer range stuff, hunting, that my .338 Win Mag and 6.5x284 can't cover, 26" is the minimum I'd consider. I'm actually looking at a 30" barrel plus a muzzle brake.

For LR hunting/shooting 26" would be my minimum. Good luck!

Around my area, of those 3 choices, 7mm Rem Mag is by far the easiest to find on the shelf. Your area may vary.

That depends on what bullet weight and type you're looking for and if it's off the shelf or online, i.e. lately the HSM Berger 210 VLD are almost non-existent off the shelf and online. There are plenty off the shelf in my local area for 160g and lighter in 7MM Rem Mag and 180g and lighter for the .300 Win Mag. .280 Rem is not as plentiful as the magnums.

I read an article a few years back about a mule deer kill by a 270 at 730 yards.
I really love my 270 and I use it. However I think if your 270 has become a safe queen then changing calibers may be just the thing to make it an active rifle.

Hey Mike. What part of the country do you live?

No apologies needed, I make mistakes on a daily (hourly if you ask my wife) basis . All the long actions are able to handle the standard magnums. Only exceptions would be the 338 Lapua based rounds (which Savage makes a special action for) and some of the rounds that have the larger .580" and up bases like some of the Weatherbys.
