new savage model 11vt in 308

I'm new to the site and just purchased a savage 11vt 308 and were wondering what kind of accuracy I should expect with factory ammo? I plan on experimenting with 150 grain and either 165 or 168 grain ammo.what's everyone's thoughts on this rifle? Is it a good shooter

Im going to guess the 150gn will not group well. The projectile jump to lands is quite long vs heavier projectiles, as well as the 1:10 twist favoring heavier projectiles. 165 to 168gn have been grouping well under an inch for me- even with the terrible Bushnell scope. I have installed an EGW 0 MOA rise single piece rail and replaced the optic with a Nikon 3-9 x 40 ProStaff in Warne MEd rings. Have yet to use that set up, but will get to the ranegthis week end to tst.

Yeah I've been reading that the 1:10 twist for the 308 tend too shoot the 165-168grain the best. Just wanted to try 150's for the extra velocity

What brands of ammo have you been trying or you been reloading? I don't reload so I have to try a few different brands to figure out what works best

I have shot the hornady 150 white tail,of coarse this was through a 300 wm 110ba, it also prefers the heavier gr.

My mod 11 shoots 150s very well with varget, sevral types of 150s as well, nosler bt was slightly better than the hornady sst but both shot under 1/2 moa. Fast twist ar-15s are supposed to preffer heavier 22 cal bullets as well but many also shoot lighter ones very well. If you want to shoot the 150s i would say go for it

I'll agree with you there my ar is 1:7 and it loves the heavier bullets, sierra has shown the best results using imr 8208 xbr pretty good with the nosler also, holding 1\2 in. Groups, my 300 wm still trying to find the best combination.

I'm sure you know this but you have to rezero when you switch ammo weights. Pick the one you feel is most accurate. You should get exceptional accuracy even from store bought ammo with your Savage. The VT barrel is made to tolerate more heat than the lightweight sporter contoured barrels.
Warne steel rings are extremely sturdy but heavy. Leupold makes a lighter aluminum but also sturdy ring setup.
    Congrats on your new rifle!

So far the absolute best groups from factory (reasonably priced) ammo have come from 175 gn Sierra Match Kings for me. "Federal Match" in the gold box. Their 168 gn SMK is in second place.

Buddy of mine in sadalia mo. Knows the owner of sierra and I was able to have a tour of there factory, this doesn't affect my choice of bullets, for the price,my opinion make the one of the best bullets on the market.

Well my savage 308 shot pretty well today all 3 brands shot well into 1 inch groups had 2 shots touching while the third was within an inch could have been me though. All in all I was pleased may try some 165-168 grain next

I handload for my 11vt. Best loads to date were using 168 SMK with 43.5 grains of Varget. It also shoots the 178 A-max very well with the same load of Varget. My overall lengths are 2.800 with the 168 and 2.750 using the A-max. Both loads shoot under 1" at 200 yards

I'm gonna try to get some hand loads loaded I saved all my brass but until then I bought some federal fusion 165gr as I plan to hunt with the rifle also. I thought about trying out shooting the hornady 168gr amax too. I hear some people have had excellent results using it as a hunting bullet as well.

For factory hunting ammo in .308 I had great luck with Federal Premium with the 165gr Sierra GameKing BTSP. Now that I load my own bullets I still try to keep these on my shelf. Brutal on deer.

I've never bought match ammo but a friend likes the Black Hills 175gr. in .308W. I load my own using the 175gr Sierra MatchKing or the 168gr Nosler Competition BTHP.

For me on my 10FLPC-K .308 shoots best on 168 A-MAX on 42.2gr of IMR 4320 Powder. Hitting steel ALL day at 500yds.
