    Wood is Good Build thread...

Building a shorty hunter...110FP with a 16.5" Heavy barrel in 308, Walnut M40 style stock, CDI DBM, EGW 20MOA rail, SWFA 3x15 scope, Eagle Stock pack

Metal will be OD CeraKote, stock is getting oil finish in Deep Chestnut Brown...test stained a piece tonight...gorgeous...

From the working end...stock is wetted down with water, I'm on 320 grit now...

Finished LOP is 12.75" cut 2" off forend as well, wallowed out barrel channel from tiny sporter to heavy varmint...shorty

Lucked out and got a $29.95 stock from Numrich that had a lot of nice figuring in it...

Not bad for a $29 stock is it?

Took the block of wood I cut off the stock when I shortened the LOP and squared it up...chucked it onto a lathe and VOILA...Walnut Bolt Handle Knob...had not worked a wood lathe in 35 years or so...amazing how quick it comes back...used a piece of maple to do one practice run...then chucked up the walnut...

Very nice. Good to see more folks realizing that a 29 1/2' barrel is not necessary.
Love the craftsmanship and creativity on the bolt handle.
Ought to make a darn fine hunting rig.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.

How did you attach the wood bolt knob to the bolt?

It is a beautiful stock. Was the stock inlet for a savage?

Drilled it slightly undersize and then slowly screwed it on a few threads and back off, back on, back off until it pretty much threaded itself...I plan on putting release agent on it and putting some Devcon in to it and letting it cure...it should screw off with the Devcon making pretty good threads...if not...oh well its screwed/glued on...if I ever need to take it off just put it into a vise and squeeze until the wood pops...clean up...

OK...a little more work tonight...started out stippling the stock in the grip area and the for end...took my wet hand and gripped the pistol grip...traced a pattern and went at it after I practiced a little on a spare piece of walnut to see how the carbide bit would bite into the wood...once I finished went on to the forend...pretty simple and effective...did not want to checker it so stippling was the next best thing...

Then on to the fore end...nothing fancy...plain and simple...

In the pic above and this one you can see the GroveTec Flush cups installed...easy button easy...

I was on a streak so...why not go ahead and glass bed while I'm at it. so I spent an hour or so taping, filling with plumbers putty and mixing Devcon 10101...didnt know how much...mixed 9OZ only needed about 6...oh well...got enough left over to do another rifle I think...2030 tomorrow night will be 24 hours and I'll pop her out...

Once I pop it out I will clean up the stock...oil it and send it off to CDI for bottom metal and inlet...

I will spend my time while its gone applying Alumahyde II in either Coyote or OD Green to all the metal and let it cure a week or two after a 4 hour oven cure...

Scope will be a Nikon Pro Staff 5 4.5 x 18 x 50 with custom turret for the FGMM 175 SMK @ 2600fps on the EGW 20MOA rail with Burris X-Treme Rings...

I vote OD green. Think it will complement the wood better. Again, awesome work!

Got distracted...phone rang...no release agent on the barrel, was bedding full length of barrel channel to seal up raw wood....4 layers of tape to give a little room to free float it, didn't apply release agent to tape...that was enough to completely lock it up...action was loose after the first couple pf taps on the screws...barrel refused to budge...live and learn...once I got it apart the tape peeled right out...nice bedding job over all...almost...

That really stinks. You did a really great job on the stock. Do you have a link to where you bought the blank? How many hours did you have into the stock up to bedding?

Even though the stock was damaged in the end it was quite impressive what you did with it. Looking forward to ver 2.0.
