    95 gr vld shot placement

Never killed a deer with a 95 gr vld. Going to shoot a doe with one this year.

Will a 95 gr berger reliably punch through a deer shoulder or should I go with a "bow" shot? Distances from velocity of 3000 fps out to impact velocity of 2000 fps.

I would stick to bow type shots or head or neck.
    Shoulders a bad idea

Definitely bow shot. I use the 140's in my 260, they make it look like the deer swallowed a grenade. Even if it penetrates, you'll lose the shoulder, maybe both shoulders.

That's was how I was leaning as well! Just curious to hear people feedback, excited to see how this 95 gr does

I like the shoulder shot myself especially at lower velocities. I've never had a berger fail to penetrate the advertised 3" before starting expansion. The front shoulder generally just has a caliber sized hole then the insides are just jello. For a bigger critter I would take the behind the shoulder shot since there is more mass and muscle to work in but for deer which are relatively small the shoulder works great and ensures awesome terminal performance.

Me and a buddy got 2 antelope this weekend with 95 gr vld at 3000 fps mv. One at 657 yards and one at 379. Both mid heights 2 inches behind shoulder. The one at 379 dies of hydrostatic shock, no bones hit dies before hit ground. 1.5" exit hole. 657 yard took 10 steps and fell over 1" exit

Worst Case Scenario for high velocity light VLD bullet, Dead Center front shoulder close range. Still Exited. insides mush.

Very impressed with the 95 gr vld, 3 shots, 3 kills, 3 exit wounds, 657, 380 and 75 yards. none went more than 10 yards

Good to know. I built a 243 sporter on a Savage action this year with a factory take off barrel I bought from a forum member. The 95 gr VLD-Hunter is the most accurate bullet in my rifle yielding 1.3" groups at 200 yards and a velocity of 3033 fps.

Absolutely! But don't plan on any useable meat from that shoulder.
