    duramaxx


    I have a duramaxx stock I bought new a few years ago and am now trying to fit it to my project. I am having the general problem of the barrel hard against the right side of the barrel channel. I have tried using my dremel to remove material in the recoil lug area and all over the stock with no success. Today I decided to just keep removing material until it fit and still no luck. I have removed a large amount of material from the is stock and have not had any success. Any ideas?

    I would just epoxy bed it into the stock, and center up barreled action in the channel when clamping. Then you are certain the action is stable in the stock and it will be straight.

    I tried doing it that way once and no luck. When the barrel is lined up the tang is not in the correct position. I clamped and bedded it and when I removed it it was back in the same position

    Hmmm. What did you use to keep the barrel centered? Many folks will wrap the barrel with electrical tape or make sleeves to fit over the barrel in 2 places to keep it centered in the barrel by supporting the barrel straight in the channel. As for the tang, unless it is really noticeably off center, if you are floating the tang anyway you can dremel material to make it look a little more centered when you do the float.

    I wrapped it in a blue scotch tape to keep it centered. The tang is very noticeably off center when the barrel is in the correct place. At least a quarter inch and doesent sit down in the stock like it should. I have removed far more material than I think should be necessary for it to fit so either I'm really missing something or this stock is messed up beyond help

    This is the amount of material I've removed around the front pillar and in the recoil lug area.
    I have also dremeled around the rear pillar, the tang area, and the trigger

    Hmmm I am starting to think the factory inlet that thing way off. Might look and see how straight the pillars are in relationship to the barrel channel, but I am more thinking the whole inlet is probably slanted a little in the stock. You may end up having to open your tang area wayyyyyyy up and enlarge your pillar's holes a bit to gain some slop and then re-bed.

    "2001", from the picture, it looks like that is a Heavy barrel in a Sporter stock, and it looks like there is very little free float.
    Are you sure that barrel is channeled all the way down in the stock, with free float, allowing the action to seat?
    Agree with "boots", the centerline of the pillars may not line up with the center line of the barrel. In that case the pillars could be completely drilled out, the barreled action inletted to the stock, and pillar bedded using the "action & pillars all @ once method".
    Sometimes these stocks come out of the mold "hot" and can warp or bend, but if that's the case, and if it's not too bad, you may still be able to make it work.

    All Duramax stocks have the curved forend. Just remove the material from the barrel channel with sand paper.

    I relieved the tang area quite a bit and pulled off the trigger and mag box to make sure neither of those were causing interference. I still cannot get this thing to fit in the stock. I checked the alignment of the pillars and the barrel channel and they seem to be in line. At this point I have removed so much material I'm not sure I can make the stock look good if I ever get it to fit.

    out of curiosity has the barrel ever been removed? I have found sometimes when replacing the recoil lug that it might be offsided just enough to push barrel one way or the other. I also have 2 duramax stocks and had something similar on one of them.

    Run a long straight edge down the center of the pillars and down thru the barrel channel. If the straight edge is centered on the channel then the channel being off center isn't your issue. While doing this also take notice if the straight edge centers up in The tang area. If it all centers up then it is straight and you most likely have a bedding issue(something bottomed out and interfering ).

    If the straight edge isn't centered then you will need to determine which is off, the pillars, tang, and/or the barrel channel.

    If you suspect it could be a pillar, run a straight edge from the center of the tang to the center of the barrel channel. This should show you which one(or both) are off center.

    Laser levels work really good for this.

    In your pictures it shows both the barrel and the tang being pushed over to the same side. This leads me to believe the pillars are both off center. If only one pillar was off or something was interfering I think it would push the barrel to one side and the tang to the other.

    In those pics was the action actually bolted to the stock with the action screws, or was it just sitting in there?

    My remedy I think would be to Drill out the pillars, get a new set, bolt them to the action, and re bed the action and pillars all at the same time.

    I ran a straight edge and everything seemed to be in line. I did replace the barrel but before I did that I sat the action with the factory barrel in the duramaxx and it was also off to the right. In the photo where the barrel is off to the side it is bolted in. In the photo of the tang I am holding the barrel in the correct position.. It is basically one OE the other, the barrel is straight and the tang is off or vice versa. The barreled action won't sit straight without the action bolts in place so I don't think the pillars are the issue. I am honestly stumped

    With the action out of the stock, screw in your action bolts and hold your straight edge up to them and see if the barrel is leaning one way or the other. As mentioned above, a bad recoil lug or metal particles between the action/lug/nut could tilt the barrel a bit.

    Everything seems to be straight when the straight edge is against the bolts. I have had the barrel off and on a few times with no change in fit so I don't know if the recoil lug could be installed crooked

    This is a stumper. Without being able to handle it myself I am afraid I am out of ideas.

    I wish I could figure it out. This is my first crack at any stock work and I guess I couldn't have been dealt a more challenging hand ha ha
