    Stainless Steel rust removal

Well it happend, an older all stainless steel Savage rifle I received had little dark spots around the bolt and in some other places. The rifle must have been stored in a damp enviroment for some time.

I notice that cleaning with No.9 did not remove some of the spots I thought unbernt rifle powder. After closer exam. the metal was pitted very shallow in the dark spots.

I hope most can be polished out. What is best to use?

    Thanks

The acetic acid in white vinegar will break down light rust. It also damages bluing and paint if that is an issue.

steel wool is the worst thing to put anywhere near stainless. most rust on stainless is caused by iron transfer from steel macine tooling, hand tools, wire brushes, contact with carbon steel in general.

I would probably start by trying some stainless polish from an auto parts store.
