What is the benefit of using the 7.62x39 brass as a base vs the 308 and necking to .277 or for that matter using the 22-250 or 250 and necking up to .277 and then going AI?

My 250AI is a nice lil round with power in a small package. I would bet a .277 version would be nice.

I have not heard of either of those you mention, but I am sure someone has tried it somewhere.

I guess I am just curious why the 7.62x39 as a parent brass.

The 7.62x39 has a lot of taper and a soft shoulder so in theory it would help To ackley it, but as boots said there are so many better parent cases to go for the list is endless and 7.62x39 is probably bottom of the list unless you want to do it for the pure weirdness factor.

And if your wanting a short wierd .277, there are reamers and gauges for 6.8 spc ackley 40 degree shoulder

Thank you for taking for taking the time to reply, I'm getting a 7.63x39 bolt action and thought the Ackley treatment might be a cheap booster for the round, and brass is all over the place.

I have always wanted to Ackley the 7.62x39 case and neck it down to 25 cal. Thought that would make a great coyote thumper with 75-87gr bullets. Good luck with your build.

Just playing devils advocate, doesn't fireforming and wildcatting off of the 7.62x39 case kind of defeat the purpose and benefits of this round? being able to shoot dirt cheap steel cased ammo is the main benefit of this round, if your going to go to the hassle of getting nice brass and fireforming, and necking down, ect, wouldnt a 308, or 250, or something similar based parent case be better and keep the 7.62x39 rifle for what it was made for? just sayin

If we only did this for practical purposes this forum would have one page and two posts-tops.

A 7.62x39AI could be great round- is your barrel a .310 or .308? Also, what twist? If its a .308 I say do the AI conversion and have a blast- with the bullet selection out there you could make it a hell of a varmint/hunting/target round depending on twist and application.

If its a .310 than you could still do it but seeings that you're thinking about a .277 barrel how about a 6.5? It would be like a 6PPC on steroids and that sounds pretty awesome to me.

Indeed, many folks use the Grendel in bolt actions and single shots. The TC Encore also has a good following among Grendel shooters.

The Grendel and the PPC line of cartridges are essentially AI versions of the 7.62x39 cartridge. The PPC cartridges are designed for the best possible accuracy in bench rest rifles and do well there. The 6.5 Grendel was designed as an all-round medium game cartridge optimized to shoot accurately and precisely in the AR-15 platform. It has an excellent reputation for accurate shooting in all bullet weights when the SAAMI-spec chamber is used in the rifle.

There is also a reloading handbook dedicated to the 6.5 Grendel with a fair bit of general AR-15 and hunting information thrown in for good measure: 6.5 Grendel Reloading Handbook.

Wildcats have been designed and marketed for these cartridges in virtually every caliber for .204 through .375, depending on what the developer fancied at the time.

If you could hunt with semi's in my state it would be a toss up between the Grendel and 300 Blackout. Maybe even the 7.62 as I already have the Yugo SKS.
