Browning 71 .348 Win. High Grade 24" Bbl

So in 1974 I went deer hunting in the Sierras (Thomas Creek, Jumbo Pass, east of Gardnerville, and Franktown Creek--Reno, NV area) most of the time with a man named Mr. Ross who had a collection of fine rifles for varmints to Kodiak bears. His favorite rifle was one of his two levers, a 71 Winchester in .348. He had mostly bolts with scopes and most of the rifles were Weatherby Mark Vs from Germany or Sako in the 60s. It was good enough for him up to 200 yards and then some for elk in bad weather or timber or where the scope on a rifle is more of a problem than a cure.

So about two weeks ago I saw a Browning 71 .348 Win. High Grade 24" Bbl at Hazelwood's Cabelas and grabbed it NIB unfired with manual and wrapping inside. I had wanted one of the special run of 71s by Winchester Miroku in 2012 but never saw one or could find one to order and then this rifle appears and boy am I glad I waited to get the Browning version without the tang safety and the rebounding hammer.

Now I am in a quandary for ammunition.....

    Where can I find some?

Out of curiosity, I did a search for .348 winchester. It looks like ammo will be hard to come by and you should probably start rolling your own.

Barnes sells some .348 porjectiles (http://www.barnesbullets.com/copper_...Winchester.pdf)

According to Chuck hawks, Hornady offers a 200 grain projectile as well. (http://www.chuckhawks.com/348win.htm). It's a "flex tip" bullet.

Midway sells brass (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/290...348-winchester), so I assume others do too.

Midway does not sell any loaded ammo,, but Cabelas does (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Buffa...ion/740345.uts) but it is not cheap.

    Good luck. Have fun.
