Hi. I rechambered on of my 223 Axis rifles into 22-204 Imp. Why? There was an article in Shooting Times and it sounded like fun. It uses 204 R brass opened up to 224.
NO, it's NOT the 222 Mag. It has the improved shoulder and little body taper.
Shoots excellent.

So no bolt head change? Or Magazine modifications? I figured since it was .20 Caliber, it might need some changes

To go from .223 to .204 does not need a bolt head change. It only requires a barrel and a .204 go gage and the tools of course. The magazine works as well.

Same family? Sure, just like 221 fb, 223 rem, etc. Those pundits that keep saying it's just a 222 mag, obviously are smarter than Dave Kiff at PTG.
I forget to mention the obvious to savgebolt....yes, it would need a new bbl to be 20 cal.
I changed another Axis 223 into a 6.5 TCU with a McGowan SS bbl. Yep same bolt face, etc. Why? I like to tinker and have a TC 14" in 6.5 TCU, so I had all the supplies.
The reason I did my 22-204 is I have a quantity of new 223 Axis bbls and a M12 in 204R, so I have brass, etc....

What made me say that and perhaps the reason why others say that is because the Ruger 204 was based from a .222 Magnum case. Hornady and Ruger necked it down with a 30 degree neck angle instead of keeping the original 23 degree neck angle and now you necked it back up but kept the 30 degree neck angle . The only reason I don't have a 22-204 yet is because I flipped a coin and the .223 Ackley Improved won. What I was going to do is change from the 30 degree to a 40 degree neck angle like the Ackley Improved.It is still in the hunt for the next 4 builds but has taken a back seat from already having the .223 AI barrel done. Why the military didn't choose the .222 magnum is beyond me, it was a fine cartridge.

To answer the OPs post yes it can. Depending on the original caliber, dictates how many parts need to be changed.

cranebird, perhaps I didn't explain my rechambering enough. It does indeed has a 40 degree shoulder, and the AI body taper. I did not use the reamer that PTG sells for this application. I remember talking about the Shooting Times article where the author bought that reamer. I just call mine iteration the '22-204 RAI'. Cornfusing, I know. However, since I reload this using a .224 universal neck die, I don't have to worry about adhering to any standards......
In addition to a bunch of different 223s I also have an regular Axis I rechambered into 223 AI. I love that rifle. Had I known that Savage was coming out with the HB Axis, I would have purchased that for the basis for my build. I have already purchased and rechambered 2 HB Axis rifles into 22-250 AI and 243 AI.
These rifles are so easy to work with and cheap, it's amazing. One you sort out the god-awful factory triggers, that is. ha ha

Ok so it ain't a .222 magnum.I'm at odds with the axis.If someone built an honest to god aftermarket benchrest stock for an axis, I'll be on the bandwagon.
And use the regular model 10 magazines!
