What a terrible day at the range...

...until I got my Axis out!

I was left a bit disaffected by the accuracy my AR pistol and AR-180B with its goofy scope setup, but I was relieved to find my TAXIS project still shooting like a champ. I was even more relieved to see that I was able to duplicate the performance of a load that shot similarly well during testing (115gr Berger VLD Hunting, 45gr H1000, Federal LR primer). In truth, the first three shots were the subgroup on the right, and I may have gotten too excited. Still, I was pretty pleased with a 0.507" center-to-center group (my math was wrong on the paper).

    Formerly 30-06 Axis with a 26" Shilen 243 Winchester 1-8 varmint contour pre-fit barrel.
Shimmed up trigger and homemade epoxy bolt knob
Boyd's Axis short action stock with homemade brass pipe pillars.
Redfield Battlezone 6-18x44mm scope in UTG low pro max strength rings, EGW 20 MOA rail.

Nice! How do you like that scope? I was eyeing it but the caliber-specific BDC turrets were turning me off. Is it pretty cluttered with all that junk on there? How's the clarity and tracking?

I bedded my Boyd's tacticool just doing a standard bedding with acraglass. Do you have any pics of your pillar bedding?

The scope is pretty nice. Its AO is a little optimistic, being marked out to 1000 when the tube only allows for an advertised 18 MOA of upward elevation adjustment. Putting it on a 20 MOA rail would seem to remedy that, since I measured more than the 36 MOA of total adjustment listed in the fact sheet. The 6-18x44mm version does have a standard MOA elevation turret as well as the two aforementioned BDC turrets. I tried to get to get MOA-counting turrets to retrofit a 3-9x44mm Battlezone, which only included the two BDC turrets, but Leupold has been jerking me around for months. I'm am NOT pleased with their customer service.

The point about the limited adjustment range has thus far proven rather moot as I don't have access to any ranges longer than 200yd. Still, the scope works well mechanically. The adjustments are consistent and true to the turret markings. Optical clarity is similarly good to my eye, but I haven't tested it in low light or low sun conditions.

I've owned two AR-180B's and neither one ever shot better than 2" at 100 yards no matter what load I tried (hand load) I sold em in disgust.
