anyone shoot a .257 Roberts?

I had one in a Remington 760 pump and it was very effective on whitetails. Quick kills and little recoil. I bet it would be a lot of fun in the lightweight Savage rifle.

No experience with the 257 Bob, but a real fun 25 cal to use in a short action build is the 250 Savage-AI. It can pretty much do whatever the Bob can, and brass is much easier to come by since you can neck up 22-250 and being an AI case the brass lasts forever. I have one in an Apache Gunworks barrel that is 16" Varmint contour and I love it. Nice light and handy.

The Bob is just a bit too long to squeeze in a SA but in a LA it should work fine. If you are dead set on the Bob I would go with a 257-AI and make your brass last and give you a bit more zip if needed.

I don't have a Bob but I have built a couple 250 savages and have been well pleased. It is by far my favorite hunting cartridge. I have taken coyotes, feral hogs, deer and my nephew even took an elk with one. Very versatile and much more deadly than people give it credit for. I am able to push 115 bergers at 2840fps in a 24" barrel and I have yet to see anything walk away from it. It is a very efficient cartridge with very little recoil.

I had one in a Ruger 1B. Nice shooter. Mild is the thought. I have a .250 and a .257Wby now and won't likely buy another .25. I'd pick the .25-06 over the .257 Roberts from my experience.

Yeah I hear you the 25-06 is the sane option; it will easily surpass or duplicate the .257 or .257 AI. Plus you get the easy availability of replacement barrels and slick feeding of my 30-06 action. Guess its a no brainer...25-06 here I come.

If you're going custom, go 257AI. If you want to just run factory rounds, and pick a gun/barrel off the shelf, 25-06. The 257AI is great because you get a little more room in a long action for the high BC bullets. Overall, the 25-06, and the 257AI are pretty close.

I have two 257 Roberts one in Winchester featherweight and one a custom order Savage (see my separate post on this forum regarding the new Savage I had made last year). I have taken some nice deer with both and the new Savage took 3 nice whitetails last year...puts them down hard. I shoot Hornady Custom 117 grain btsp and can shoot moa with both rifles. I do not reload (yet) which I know is a huge advantage with this rifle. The Winchester is a little finicky with some ammo (and I have not played enough with the Savage yet to know). Always had good luck with Hornady though. I love this caliber because it has plenty of knockdown power for deer sized game and almost zero felt recoil, which is really nice when doing a lot of target shooting too. Plus there is something nostalgic about the caliber and it's something different than everyone else has. These two rifles will be the ones that I start my boys out on when they are old enough...it's more gun than say a 243 but without any more felt recoil in my opinion and thus a great option for a young deer hunter yet it's enough gun that they will never outgrow it. I have a lot of other rifles, but this is my go to choice for deer hunting in the Adirondacks and northeast.

I passed up just two days ago an opportunity to get a Ruger 77 International in .257 Roberts. I gave it serious consideration though. I ended up getting a Savage 25 .204 LWV-T. First time seeing a 25.
I realized the Roberts was going to mean careful collecting of ammunition over hill and dale to use. I found it to be inaccurate in the Ruger 1B and wondered at the accuracy the .257 Roberts could get from a bolt action full stock and came to the conclusion it'd be a headache.

My 250Savage shoots like a lazer beam, and puts deer DRT. I load 85grn TTSX's @ just under 3,200fps, and to my suprise, there is very little meat damage. It has become my favorite hunting rifle! :-))

I have a custom mauser I built a few years ago and my Grandfathers winchester model 70 in the 257 roberts I love them to death I have been thinking about a savage LA with heavy barrel as a praire dog rifle. very little recoil but I have an advantage I handload for both of the rifles ammo maybe a little hard to come by. but you cant go wrong with the roberts.

My first .25-06 was a Ruger 77 Heavy Varmint. I put a scope on (Bushnell fixed 6X) and reloaded for it after shooting the factory ammunition which was already very accurate.

What I like about the .25-06 is it is accurate and fast. It can easily fill the one and only .25 caliber rifle niche. In any application.

I have a 257Rob in a Ruger M77 platform and I freaking love it. Working on a ladder test for it now (with new components) but it has taken many a deer with factory ammo.

It was my first deer rifle and it will be handed down to my kids. Awesome round for deer hunting.
