    Savage without grooves

I have an older Savage 111. It has no grooves in the barrel nut. I was interested removing the barrel. Can it not be done? I have read that a pipe wrench would work. Would it?

The early smooth nut that you have should have a hole drilled in the bottom for a pin spanner to fit into. So the choices for removal are 1-pin spanner, 2-hack saw the nut off, or 3-pipe wrench. Obviously 2 and 3 require a new barrel nut.

Okay. It says Savage 111. Would a Savage 110 Barrel be compatible with this?

There is another option. SSS sells a nut wrench that will accomodate both the new smooth barrel nuts and the older ones with the spanner hole.

Yes, all the small shank barrel nuts for the models 10, 11, 16, 110, 111, 116, etc will all fit.

I had one of those old J-era rifles with the smooth nut. You'd have to ask sharpshooter(Fred) if the wrench for the new nuts will take the old smooth nut off.

If all else fails, a pipe wrench will take any nut off.

I took one off a J Series last week with the new wrench. That's why I reccomended it several posts ago.

    Gotcha, I misunderstood.

When Savage brought the smooth nuts back they had the hole on the bottom, then they went all the way smooth.

When you said old smooth I didn't think you were talking about the J-era smooth ones. :)

SSS has two wrenches. One is configured with both of the grooved nuts and the other has holes for both the new smooth nuts and one with a small bolt that fits into the spanner hole on the old type.

Thank you to all. I got it off. I'm going to replace it with a grooved one.
