Anyone have a .260 or .260 Ackley with a short barrel?

I have been drooling over the .260 and .260 AI cartridges for a long time now, and am pretty well decided on it being my next chamber. My curiosity is what kind of velocities are guys seeing with a 18" or 20" barrel? I want a short gun, basically want to take the weight from the length of the barrel and add it to the diameter but still keep it in a reasonable weight range for carrying around with me on Mt. Hood when I am elk hunting. I have searched, but haven't found anyone with confirmed velocities out of a shorty.

Anyone have some data on a shorty .260?

Take 40-50 fps off for every inch and that should give you a ball park idea. Powders used and chamber tolerances all come into play in this so there is really no exact number anyone can give. I would say that you should still be able to get around 2600fps with a 140gr bullet and a 20" barrel.

If your gonna go short I'd go with the ackley to make up some of the velocity loss, I have a 20" 22-250 ackley and it gets about the same velocity as a 22-250 with a 24" barrel

Those Rosies are heavy elk! Even the cows can weight 1000 lbs, I wouldn't go lighter than a 140 gr

    I have a DPMS LR-260H with a 20" barrel,and depending on the 140 gr bullet,it shoots between 2550 - 2700 fps.

Thanks for all of your input guys. I have myself and two friends all wanting to build one of these. We'll see who gets to pull the trigger first and order a barrel. I think we'll go with the ackley to help make up for some of the lost velocity. It'll be up to them how long they go but I think I'll try the 20" and if it don't work I'll sell it and build something else.

It really sounds like it will be fine especially with the improved case. If I could get over 2700 I'd be tickled pink. 2600 is ok and wouldn't hinder me much but if I could reach 2700 I'd be dialed.
