    1-9,223 bullet weight?

Need to order bullets for a 1-9, .223. 69 or 75? How heavy can you go with the 223 in this twist? Using a mod 12 LRPV dual port. Still breaking the barrel in.
    Thanks

    Re: 1-9,223 bullet weight?

The 69 Sierra MatchKing is a proven bullet in the 1:9 223. I have seen several that shot that bullet well. I have only tried one 1:9 with the 75 AMax. It worked ok. Didn't group near as well as the 69SMK so I didn't play with it much more. Friend has a 10FP in a 223. His wouldn't shoot the 75AMax well at all, but his loved the 69SMK. Lots of guys will use the 77 SMK for distance (FClass). That is what I am using with my son for his FCLass rifle, but it is a 1:8 twist. Luck in your choice. Tim

My 1-9 Armalite will shoot 75 gr Hornady BTHP match pretty good. Not as well as it shoots 69 SMK's. The Hornadys don't keyhole though and will shoot around 5/8ths groups at 100 yds.

I'd say it depends on what distance you plan to shoot. My 10FLP 1:9 .223 shoots the 68gr Hornady best @ 100 yards but if you needed to go beyond 300 yards, I'd go with the 75gr bullet of either the Amax or the BTHP from Hornady. My 10 shoots the BTHP better than it does the Amax.

I did an article recently on the precision carbine in 223 that is a 9 twist. You may want to read it. Savages factory test target was shot with 77gr SMK's and I found them to shoot very well in that gun. The problem with this bullet is it is very expensive and comes in boxs of 50.
I have two friends that have LRPV in 223 and they shoot amazing with 53 gr match bullets with N133 powder, and they have both won many factory match's with that combo.

    The 69 A-Max, 1:9 twist 223

I have a friend that I shoot with at the 600 yard range with the above in an AR! I believe the barrel is either 18" or 20", not sure, but the last time we shot there was a 10mph crosswind and thermal! I am pretty sure he got 3 or 4 shots in the 7 ring, all the rest were 8 to bulls! (66 rounds)

I am still shocked at his ability to shoot this gun!

I was shooting a 308 and just beat him by a few points! I adjusted my windage 1.5moa's to compensate with 175 SMK BTHP's. 15 to 15.25moa high, FYI, 28" 1-10twist barrel.

I religiously use 69 gr SMK's in my 9 twist Savage now. I did use 68 grain Hornady Match for a while but had consistency issues. I asked around and a few people have noticed the same thing. I would shoot .3's with one box then close to 1" with another box so I quit using them.

MOA is easy when you find a load using the 69 grain SMK's. They are also consistent from lot to lot.

My 1 in 9 twist Savage shoots the 75 grain A-Max very accurate out to 600 yards, slightly more so than the 69 SMK.

    Craig,
These guys know their hand loads, that's for sure. Distance and target, that is the question. For two hundred yards or less in a 26" 9 twist barrel The factory Black Hills 52gr. match HPs @ 3300 fps work a bit better for me than the 69gr Sierra Match Kings of the same manufacturer on paper. For game at longer distances it's good to know the 9 twist will stabilize up to the 75 grainers. I didn't know that. Different coefficient, less jump to the lands with the longer bullet... interesting.

Interesting since I always found the Hornady bullets to be far more consistent and accurate than any of the Sierra bullets. My model 10 will shoot the 68gr in the .1s all day long.

250 rounds was the magic number for barrel break in for me. Kept gettin tighter until I hit that money spot. At 800 now and it is holding consistent to that point. Barrel much easier to clean at that point seemed to me. Savage 12 VLP 69 SMKs, LC09 Brass trimmed to 1.752, 26.0 Varget (2.332 OAL, should be within .005 for yours I'd guess. Measured using Hornady tool on two others and they were between 2.330 and 2.332 to lands) Stays consistent 45-92 degres so far. Hope this helps.

If anyone has an a-max load for this rifle, I could use some help. ??? I have Benchmark, RL15, H335, and Varget. Looking for your best loads with 75s and 70 bergers.

I happen to get the same thing with the Amaxs and the 77 nos cc's. What is your load for those?

    Re: 1-9,223 bullet weight?

Got the load chrony'd with Alpha Master in my wife's Savage 12 LRPV w/factory 26" barrel w/ 1:9 twist in a McMillan A2 stock off the bipod and rear sand bag.
    23.8 g XBR over BR4 primer
New Nosler brass with nothing done to prep it.
    75g A-MAX

    2901 average. 32 ES. 8 SD. over 25 shots.

No pressure signs. I haven't chronied my a-max 25.6 varget load but iirc, backwards from my mil to 600 put me at 2715fps.

Pretty promising stuff. Still pretty windy out but 5 shot groups were in the .2s to .4s. Could have been mostly two's and teens if I had a sled or front rest instead of the bi-pod.

    Good stuff.

In a couple of my Savage 1:9 twist 223's, 25.0 of H4895 is the "go to" load....but work UP to it please. Provides 3000 fps and excellent accuracy. Works rather well in my AR's as well.
