    Too much free bore

I have three Savage Arms center fire rifles, and 2 out the 3 have free bores that make it so I can't load bullets so they reach the landings.

One of them is a model 12 LRP IN 260 REM, which all of the bullets that I have for reloading will reach the lands and have enough bullet bearing surface to go inside the case mouth for a proper fit.

The other two, one being a model 116 in 6.5x284 Norma and the other a model 12 F/TR 6.5x284 Norma that none of the bullets can reach the landings and have enough bullet bearing surface to go inside the case mouth. In order to reach the lands on these two rifles there maybe about 5/32 of bearing surface inside the case mouth.

Is there anything that can be done to the chambers on these and if so what?

You don't need to touch the lands to get good accuracy - any 700 with a mile long throat proves that.

Also, there's a TON of complaints that new Savage 308s have such short throats that 175gr FGMM jams hard enough to get stuck bullets.

What kind of bullets are you using in your 12LRP, and what OALs are you touching the lands at with them?

I never really meant that I need to touch the lands, but I would like to have the opportunity to go from the lands to wherever, as I might be missing an opportunity.

You could have the barrels set back just a bit, and then rechambered using a reamer with a shorter throat. Any gunsmith should be able to complete the task for you. I would contact Jim at Apache Gunworks or Devin at Sin-Arms and see what they can do for you. Jim has been building all of my barrels for the last 2 years, and I have had Devin do work for me in the past. Both guys are good to go and do great work.
