    model 25 .223 target gun?

I have a 25 in .223. I'm wondering if its worth the time and effort to try and make this gun a reliable 300-500 yard shooter (range only) or should i just look for another platform to start with. thanks

To answer your question, the 25 is very capable of being accurate out to 300-400 yards, but if you want to take it to the next level and really shoot some small groups you're better off starting with the 10/110 action. There are very few upgrades available for the 25's and the action isn't on par with the 10/110s. I own a 25 in .17 hornet, and I've built a custom 6.5 creedmoor on the 110 action and it isnt even worth comparing. It all depends on how far you're willing to go for a little more accuracy, and it also depends on how deep your pockets are...

What looks like a target gun and what shoots like a target gun don't have to cost the same or look alike.

My 25T is very accurate, the only modification I found to be necessary was surgery on the trigger for a 1.5 pound pull.

Today I managed to get five rounds into .320" (center to center) at 100 yards, a bit under 3/8".

I was shooting Black Hills 75 grain HP Match loads in my Savage 25T in .223 Winchester.

This was my best group ever, beating a 3-shot 3/8" group I fired with a 30 pound bull gun chambered in 30-30, back in the late 1980's.

A lot of the readers here shoot better than this on a regular basis, but it was a real milestone for me to beat 3/8".

Whether this would translate into good long-range performance is hard to say. The 75 grain bullets may not stay stabilized long enough. From what I understand, the 1-9" twist is only supposed to be reliably fast enough for 65-68 grain bullets. I only have access to 100 yard facilities, so somebody else will have to find out about what a 75 grain bullet out of this gun might do at long range. I can report though that after 80 rounds at 100 yards, I have seen no evidence of yawing or key-holing.

I almost always shoot 100 yards, occasioanlly two hundred. My model 25 will shoot 3/8" at 100 yards on a good day. 5/8 even 7/8 on a bad day depending on ammo. Federal factory is the 7/8" Freedom reloads shot the 3/8" and My 55 gr SP reloads. Remington 60 gr will shoot in 1/2" all day long. PMC new 55 fmj are about 5/8". These are cheap around here. Most of my shooting is offhand, so its more of balance, trigger and scope. Trigger is awesome.

    Its a T 25VLT

I just bought a box of 60 grain V max to try.

Not sure what the Black Hills ammo is loaded with but the Serria 77gr bthp match bullet will do fine in the 9 twist. My 9 twist keeps them stable out past 1000 yards. Not sure about other brands of bullets tho.
