I just got a new Savage FHVSS in .223, I plan to put a Mueller 8x32x44 target dot scope on it, the scope has a 44 mm bell, can I get by with medium height rings?

Since it is a side focus and a 44mm dia ring, I can't see why you would not be able to use mediums.
RUMs are like woman in Stiletto heals, you know they are going to put you in the poor house, but that has never stopped anyone from pursuing them.
I have noticed that it can depend on your ring mount. The small 2 pc. weavers are not as high as something like a Ken Farrell or an EGW rail. The tactical stuff runs high. You might be able to use some manufacturers lows if you have a tactical rail.
I have that scope mounted on a short action with medium Talley Light Weights, and there is plenty of room. I could even get by with the low's "in those same rings".

Could anyone direct to a source for extension rings to fit weaver two piece (factory package gun) bases? I can't get my 4x12 Redfield on my rifle!
