    25/06 on prairie dogs ?

    .

Not abandoning any of my other prairie dog cartridges...

But the 25/06 with 75-grain Hornady bullets from a 30-inch barrel may be the best prairie dog round for less than 100 yards.

The 257 Weatherby is probably a little more effective, but not really efficient at this distance.

Hammer how about the 75 gr Sierria HP, I just bought a box of them for my new 112BVSS 25-06 when it gets here. Do you think they will work at that range ?

Re: 25/06 on prairie dogs ?

never used the 75's, but I do know that the 85gr and 100gr NBT's work VERY well on those charging critters...I actually have video of a 25-06 taking some out at about 300 yrds. I'll have to see if i can load it up and post it. It's friggin awesome.

I have a single shot long action sitting here with nothing on it too, and have been thinking about another 25-06, maybe even an AI.

Id think with the 75's you would have to be approaching the 4000fps mark, wouldnt ya?

If you're going to use Noslers, then use Nosler Partitions for better penetration on the bulls.

I have not been on too many P-dog hunts, (this year being my 4th) but i did take a heavy barreled 25-06 sako out last year with me. I did like the tereminal affect but found it to be more for the observers in the party, to much recoil for my taste. I also used 75grn v-max over a stiff load of IMR 4064.

anybody else think the 25-06 is slightly over??

PS i traded the 25 for a new in the box 22-250 LRPV

I'm not sure it is enough gun to stop a charging bull PD. A double rifle in .700 nitro express is my insurance policy when I'm in PD country.

My youngest son is quite the dare devil.

He likes to stalk bull prairie dogs in the thick sagebrush using only his KelTec.

Has gone exclusively to the 380 after the 32 proved to be effected too much by the wind on his five foot shots.

Plus the 380 has more knock down power.

Uses only FMJ for better penetration.

Pfft. I've heard stories about guys stopping a charging bull 'dog with a .22 lr by shooting them in the eye at 5 feet, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to start packing a .22 and consider myself prepared. A bull pd can sometimes take 3 or 4 fatal shots and just keep coming at you.

Re: 25/06 on prairie dogs ?

Was once told a story by a PH that backed an easterner up in the vast PD fields in Wyoming......the easterner had brought his 338 Winny mag thinking since it had downed a few bull elk on some of his other trips out west, it was sufficient for the PD fields.

Loaded with 500 rounds of full house 250grn partition loads he made his very first PD hunt. Got there before daybreak (I know, VERY dangerous as you will see!) and setup on a large PD town. Unbeknownst to them, they had setup too close they were within 50ft of the biggest, baddest, bull PD in the colony. Right at first lite......when you can just barely make out the mounds, the big bull PD made his first appearance at the mound to survey his kingdom. Sensing something wrong he immediately ducked back into the safety of his den.

The easterner made a couple of decent shots on a few of the smaller calves that came out early and one decent cow PD with only having to make one follow up shot on the cow PD. Got one of the youngsters at 35 yards....He got cocky and thought he could handle any PD that lived in the area. The PH was trying to warn him sternly when all of a sudden the big bull had all he could stand!

Enraged, it came flying outta the den scattering the boulders around the top of the mound! The poor easterner couldn't handle the sight of the blood red eyes and the deep bellowing growl of the big bull PD and panicked! He got up to run and the PH put 2 in the chest of the big PD just as he made it to the poor easterner. Unfortunately the PH had only brought his 458 Lott to the field that day. He wasn't thinking there were any really big bulls in the area.

As you can imagine it wasn't a pretty sight.......the easterner was severely mauled before the big bull PD gave the professional hunter a decent head shot. Then it took 2 shots as the first shot merely glanced off the thick skull of the big bull. They had to medivac the poor easterner out to the nearest trauma center to get him stabilized before sending him on to the specialists for re-attaching the severed limbs. The PH said it was one of the most grizzly sights he had ever seen!! Said he'll never bring anything smaller than a 50 cal for backup anymore.

    He swears this is true!!!

Be forewarned!!! Them bull PD's are dangerous!

A close friend of Scratch's, Henry "Bulldog" Wilson.

This picture was shot a few years after Scratch's untimely demise. After that day Bulldog would never again set foot in a PD colony. Instead, he spent the remainder of his life playing guitar in various sleezy honky tonks, drinking and chasing women of low charater in a desparate attempt to dull the memory of Scratches fatal gnawing.

I've seen some photos of gnawing victims. Gruesome sight. They always start at the ankles.

Seen it happen. Opens your barrel up like a flower. Even on a KelTec.

WELL ........ that's enough to make me scuttle my plans on a .416 Taylor build!

And my 9mm Kel Tec may just have to go on the auction block!

Got any more bad news while you're at it???

416 is an easy wild cat, stout punch to the shoulder though. 12 rounds through my unbraked striker is about it for me, but that is more then the rifle at the bench for me LOL

Re: 25/06 on prairie dogs ?

416 would make decent PD medicine if you're close enough. Say.......3 yards maybe? But the forward momentum of a charging bull will still make it to you....and he'll still have plenty of life in him to give you a really good mauling!

Don't even think of a head shot with something that small. It'll just make him madder!

Re: 25/06 on prairie dogs ?

Actually a neighbor brought his .416 Taylor a few weeks ago and it looks like it would unearth sage rats .......

The trouble is ...... then, unearthed ......... they are so VERY MAD!

And they charge from any distance to knaw the underwear off ya!

The neighbor went home ...... naked, bloody .......... and embarrassed!

He was so DISTRAUGHT ...... he nearly left his rifle behind ...... but I could not have resisted the temptation to try Sage Rats with it so ........ (better judgement won out) I insisted he take his big bore home!
