Short barrel 22-250 AI muzzle blast

So after fire forming up some brass, I took out my first full ackley reloads in my 20" 22-250ai today, figured the muzzle blast would be terrible with the short barrel. After a few shots I ended up taking my earplugs out because it was so tame to shoot, very mild blast, not any more than a 223, suprised the heck out of me.

Load was 36 gr h4895 w/53 gr vmax. (Max load for parent case)

My question is the 4895 just fast enough to burn all the way up in that short barrel?

Most likely. H4895 is a very versatile powder in that burn rate range and can be safely loaded down quite a ways as well. If your chosen powder was too slow you would most likely see unburnt powder in your barrel and have a pretty decent fireball. In a 20" I am betting you are just fine and can start working up to find your max if you wish.

FWIW I have a 16" 250AI barrel that I load with RL22 under 120gr Interlocks and I get good accuracy and mild recoil and no noticeable fireball.

That's pretty cool! But recommend still keeping those ear plugs in. As an 11 year active Marine vet, I know too many guys your age that already have a high percentage of hearing loss because they didn't think the 223 was all that bad. You'll appreciate the advice one day!

Thanks boots! Yep I'll try stepping it up a bit, it shows great potential for a short handi coyote gun!

Wolf- I know this is a bad excuse of me to use, but I wanted to hear that sound of the vmax hitting the prairie dogs haha.

Electronic Ear Muffs are the way to go. I can here guys 4-5 shooters down on the firing line complaining about their shooting while I'm chuckling and having a good time! Can even here the steel ring come back from 1K no problem while the range is hot!

There will only be limbs left once I get my max load figured out! I'm guess this load was only 3400 fps or so out of that 20" barrel. I'd like to get to standard 22-250 velocity but with a short handy barrel! Maybe I'll get to 3750 fps or so but we will see

If you can't get there with 4895, give varget a try. It is my personal go-to powder for the 22-250, 22-250AI (in the past), and my 243AI with the light 55-58gr bullets. My 2nd choice has been RL15. Both have given me great results, but H4895 just might get you there. RL15 shows the best velocities of those 3 in my loading manual, but of course each barrel has its own preferences so it will be interesting to see where you end up.

Shot the ackley at 300 yards today, 5 shots in 1.08" at 300 yards with cheapo nikkon bdc 3x9 scope and 8 mph crosswind. I'm in love. 36 gr h4895 is going 3600fps out of the 20" barrel. Not sure if I want to go hotter since it shoots so well.

I would leave well enough alone. That pretty fast for a 20" barrel and that kind of accuracy is nothing to sneeze at.

    Good shooting!

I love the sound of a vmax out of a 22-250 makes on contact with a prairie dog! My youngest is now 3 but when he was two he had this animal book about prairie animals he really liked. Well me being me I would ask him what sound a prairie dog makes and taught him it was "thwap" lol. Momma was not to happy with me but me but the guys I prairie dog hunt with sure get a kick out of it!

I find that once I get a winning combination I stick with it and don't look back. Only problem with that is once you have one built, load developed, and all the kinks ironed out then you just have to build another one, .

Personally I need to stop. I have several builds that need ironed out still with more load development, but deals just keep falling in my lap and I have to build another. It is a sickness I tell ya, a real sickness, but one I am happy to live with.

Boots I feel ya!! It's almost not fun when you don't have to tinker anymore right? I haven't figured what my next build will be , my savage line up now is 22-250ai, 243, and 280ai. What should the next build be?? My 280 ai is hunt able for anything but grizzle bears so I don't know if I should go bigger to an 338 edge or an 300 RUM or what?

And Limgie, my col touching the lands is 2.506, these are seated to 2.500 so I'm 6 thou off the lands.( using hillbilly measurements of a seating a bullet on on empty case in the chamber)

If you're doing all your own reloading than I don't think there would be much of a difference between 338 Edge and 300 RUM once you have all your components and powder together, but the 338 will perform slightly better at extreme ranges!

I also would go with the 338 Edge, they both use the same 300 RUM case anyway, and bullets start as light as 160gr and go all the way up to 300gr, that's a pretty big spread.

RUMs are like woman in Stiletto heals, you know they are going to put you in the poor house, but that has never stopped anyone from pursuing them.

    Another old myth.

As I mentioned before, powder burn is independent of barrel length. All the powder that WILL BURN has burnt at or shortly after peak chamber pressure, why pressures drop off rapidly after the peak as the chamber volume increases. A longer barrel ( usable bore length) only allows the resultant pressure of the gases from the powder burn more time to continue accelerating a bullet.
