    vortex scope and burris rings

Hello I am new to long range shooting I have a 110ba 338lm with a 40 moa base thinking about a vortex viper pst 6/24 50 scope and burris 30mm mid zee rings with 10moa inserts does anybody know if that would put me close to the bottom of the adj. at 100yd zero to give more adj for longer ranges thanks for info

Scope only has 65MOA of elevation adjustment. I highly doubt you would be able to zero at 100yds with 50MOA underneath it. You may want to look at the SWFA SS line as they have a larger adjustment range than the vortex scopes in the same price range.

Also keep in mind that if you have your elevation bottomed out you are no longer looking through the center of the scope and your sight picture may be slightly distorted. If you need that much elevation and intend to shoot far enough to use it then I would invest in a higher quality optic with more elevation built into the turrets like the Razor HD line or Night Force (SHV is in your price range with 100MOA of elevation adjustment).

Ballistics for a 300gr Berger OTM pushed at 2800fps show you will need 82MOA to get to 2,000 yards. I would definitely get something with more elevation on the turret rather than trying to over compensate with a rail.

You'd be looking at something like a 500yds zero (see below chart) with your planned setup, but I still believe you would have less issues with a scope that offered more adjustment range.

If you are ok with fixed magnification I would look at the SWFA SS line. I liked their mil-quad reticle much better than the Millets I looked through. I found their lines to be very thick which makes it difficult to aim precisely at a small target. I think the SWFA 3-15 would be perfect for what you are looking to do.

I know Tasco used to make SWFA scopes. Not sure if they still do or not. Don't let that bother you. SWFA are high quality scopes with a great reputation. I have NEVER read or heard anyone give anything but highest reviews, comparing them to tactical scopes more tan 2x their price. Saying Tasco is incapable of building a quality scope is no more logical than saying Leupold is incapable of building a $25 piece of junk. The truth is, they are both capable, but choose not to do so because they cater to different markets. SWFA enjoys a great reputation for quality internal mechanics and optics. The biggest reason they are priced so low is the have a simple distribution system unlike 99% of the other mfr's and therefore, essentially sell all their products at factory-direct prices.

A brief SWFA history, in 1993 the Crane Division of Navy put out a contract for 10x fixed scope which was to be developed specifically for the Naval Warfare Division. This was eventually awarded to Tasco which fulfilled the MIL-SPEC contract specifications, and then the scope was given the name Super Sniper. So technically, it wasn't a Tasco scope but Tasco Corp building a highly specialized optic for the military. The Super Sniper initially was used mainly on the M21's but was expanded to include many other rifle systems. You can look up the NSN contract number if you like N00164-93-C-205.

Later on in the 90's Tasco ran into some money troubles and was bought out and sold the "rights" to the Super Sniper to SWFA which begin producing these scopes for retail sale , also they have also managed all the quality control directly since the early 2000's. These scopes are some the best value on the market at $299.00 and $399.00 for the side focus, I have the 10x and couldn't be more pleased.
