Picked up a Savage 308 Precision Carbine last week, shot it for the second time on Sunday. At 100 yards it was getting consistent 1/4" 3 and 4 round groups (I didn't have enough ammunition to do serial 5-round groups, but that is next time). Was shooting from bags on a bench, and was using Silver State Armory 168 gr HPBTs. I was also hitting golf balls out at 200 yards (they were next to the box in the circle). My original plan was to go with a Remington 700, and then change the stock, do bedding, etc, which would have set me back $800-1000 more than this rifle - glad that I did a littel more research.

Rifle was $721 new. I have made no changes whatsoever to this rifle. The scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40. I hope to put better optics on it as soon as I can afford them.

Next time I am the range, I will take photos of 5-round groups.
I own the same gun and it's the best shooting rifle I own. Highly recommend it.
What ammo are you using?
Mine shoots great also with 168 hornadys over varget

That's one of my favorite scopes! I picked one up for really cheap when it was on sale at midway plus Bushnell had a rebate. I mounted it on my 18" heavy barrel .223 AR. I feel like I can trust that scope more than any of my others due to its simplicity and how rock solid it feels. It seems like a great fit for your precision carbine except for the lack of locking turrets if you're taking it into the field.Originally Posted by spinecracker

Shot a few more rounds this weekend. I had set the trigger little too light, and it was locking up on me, so there was lots of movement between shots (some inconsistencies in shooting position), and I didn't shoot too many rounds (20 total). I shot 10 rounds to check my zero (the scope had became loose last time out, so I stripped the scope, rings and base off, and went mental with blue loctite and a torque wrench) and hit golfballs at 100 and 200 yards. 1st target is with Federal 175gr Gold Medal Match. Ignore the holes to the left (I was rezeroing, remember?). The group is the 4 holes with the called flyer just above. The 4-round group size is 0.32" and the flyer takes it out to 0.72". 2nd target is with 175gr Match Kings with 44gr Varget. 4 round group is 0.58", the called flyer pushed it out to 0.72".A little bit of practice and fine-tuning of my handloads, and I think I am in business.

Can't wait to get mine on Friday. I had it on layaway and was starting to wonder if I should have spent the extra coin on a Remington 700 5R? This post reassures me that I made the right decision.
I love my AR15's and AK47's, but I can really see myself getting hooked on precision rifle shooting. I am really looking forward to this!
Next will be learning how to reload.
Glad to be of service, CalRon :) The rifle is bog standard, and to build a similar set up in a Remington 700 would have set me back a serious amount of cash. The only thing I am going to do to the rifle is change the trigger guard and get some 10-round magazines, and a camo paint job.
