Shot my 223 out to 1,000 yards today

Finally got to take my VLP .223 out to 1,000 yards this morning. Got up early and hit the hills on my ATV while it was cool and winds were calm. I wasnt sure if my load of 75 hornady bthp and 24.4 varget would make it to 1K so i started off with a zero @200 yards, smacked some rocks at 650 yds ,then on to 1K
I checked my ballistic app and it called for 35 MOA so i fired a shot ,hit low then dialed on up to 40 MOA and connected !
My leica rangefinder will read out to around 990 yards so i may have been shooting 1,050 yards or so.
I have some .30 cal rifles but i love the small calibers with no recoil so i can easily spot my hits.

Sweet! What's the twist and length of the barrel on your VLP,, I'm shooting basically the same load with Lapua brass and cci primer with 26" barrel.

Mines the 1/7" twist 26" barrel,i have it sitting in a choate tactical stock. I was shooting winchester brass today. My remington 700 tactical .223 likes the same load as the savage .

Try an 80gr Berger VLD...it'll be like cheating compared to the 75 HPBT and your wind drift will be less than a 308 shooting 175s.

I have a bunch of nosler-sierra 80 grainers but didnt take them today. I was really suprised how well the 75 grainers did today and there pretty cheap too.

yep...the 75,s suprised me as well. Be as it may I havent tossed them out that far "yet". Winds here in southwest Tx are a real pain in the a**. Mid June and were still getting 20-25 mph gust in the city and up to 30mph out in the desert valleys.
    What speeds are you getting?

Getting around 2900 fps with 24.4 varget ,the rifle can handle a hotter load but i dont want to push it hard just for plinking.

    Curious:
I calculated your moa adj. for drop at 1K using a 75gr bt going 2900fps as input and guess,d on altitude and center of bore to center of scope, temp, humidity. I came up with 39.2 moa. Pretty darn close to the adjustment you ended up at. Im curious as to how your bal. app. came up being off by so much. (35moa).

Pretty sure it was 1050-1100 yards ,i ranged the tree line in front of the area i was shooting . I will take my GPS next trip and get a range reading from it.

    this caught my eye.
i recently put together a t/c contender with a 1-8 TWIST 16 1/2 bbl and have yet to complete load development.
just waiting for my new glass to arrive and will get busy

That sounds like a blast! I'm not quite there with my 223. Got out to 700 with 69 smks but am trying working up with some nice loads with the 75s. That's good to hear they make it that far! How was the wind with them out that far?
