As usual, Bill Pa has "the" answer! :)) I'm not set up like that, so I just stone all of mine shorter to a length where I am sure they don't bottom out.
Hey FW, you can do the same thing with a small O ring and a #6 finish nail. Its how I checked them before I made that depth gauge.

Without the base, take the base screw and just barely start it into the action, count the number of turns required to bottom out on the barrel. Remove screw, place mount on action, insert screw through mount and count number of turns needed to tighten mount to action. If the number of turns is less, you are good to go. If not, the screw will have to be shortened.
