My .35 Rem

I started toying with the idea of playing with a Savage last year and to see if it was as easy to change barrels as everybody was saying. I had a look at Shilen and what was available in pre-chambered barrels. If I was going to re-barrel a Savage it was going to be something interesting! I went down the list and saw the .35 Rem. A .35 Rem in a modern bolt action would be pretty different.

So I ordered a 19" barrel. Snagged a Savage on another forum(pretty cool little carbine in itself: short action, accutrigger, centerfeed DBM, thin 20" barrel in .308 Win). The only issue is that I had to have a custom made bolt head to accommodate the .35 Rem non-standard bolt head.

A few days ago I finally got around to get all the pieces together. Feeds perfectly form the DBM. Should be a cool little rifle to play with.

A short barrel black rifle in a synthetic stock, detachable magazine, picatinny rail, 1-4 scope. One could almost call it "Tactical"! In a 108 year old cartridge.

I've always been interested in this cartridge and had been looking for a Marlin 336 in this chambering, this is a really good idea! who did you get to do the bolthead?

I've got an old Remington model 141, and a Remington 760 both in 35 rem. It's one of my favorite calibers, and it's hard to beat for a good brush gun. Something with a carbine length that's easy to shoot would be pretty neat. What's involved in the bolt head? I'm assuming it needs to be modified due to the case design, not the actual bolt face diameter?

SSS did the bolt head for me. It had to be modified for the bolt head size. The .35 Rem has a .460 rim diameter contrary to the "standard" .473. Remington apparently used the same bolt head in their bolt action rifles and pistols chambered in .35 Rem without too much issue. I tried .35 Rem ammo in my Savage when it was still a .308 Win and the extractor would not reliably catch the rim of the cartridge. Maybe Savage heads are little more sloppy (or at least mine was) compared to Remington.

Very nice! I'm doing the same thing with Stevens but in 358 winchester. .35's are great calibers.

A couple of years ago I kicked around the idea of a 35 Remington. I wasn't sure how or who could make a 35 Rem. bolt head. When I saw that 6.8 SPC bolt heads were somewhat available, I went with the 30 Remington. For my use as a cast bullet rifle, the 30 Remington offered some advantages over the 35 Remington. Mainly the longer neck, which in my view is better suited for cast bullets.

I just got the 30 Remington finished and I'm currently working up cast bullet loads for it. It shows promise.

SSS did it for me. Opened up an SPC head I would presume.

Another possibility would be to open up a PPC or 7.62X39 bolt head. Just a touch smaller than a 35 Rem. Good to know that SSS can do that work and provide a working bolt head.

Give the 180 grain Hornady SSP a shot(pun?). My 141 Remington thinks it's a Varmint rifle when these are pushed by Benchmark! I am going to give it a try on Chucks this year.

I have a 35 Rem pistol barrel for my Contender. It's a blast to shoot, and mine loves the 200 gr Hornady and Rem round nose bullets. The Rems are softer than the Hornady's. It shoots moa with W-748 powder and Rem 9 1/2 primers.
