200 Stevens or Savage 110 action for 6.5 Swedish build?

Hi all,

So my story is I have been looking for a Tikka T3 in 6.5 Swedish. I've been reading about various calibers and loa dings fir a few
Months and settled on it for my rifle acquisition or build. It's uses will be for both deer and maybe elk and long range shooting
With my buddies at the range. I like the history of the round. I like the slower burn of the propellant to save barrel life too. I like the reloading potential which I currently don't do.

Long story short, I can't find a Tikka and I came across several threads talking about building on a savage action and it sounds
Like fun!

So, what's the preferred action to start with? What are the differences in the 110, 111, 116?

Also is Shilen the most effective for accuracy/cost in barrel choice?

Best thing for you to do now is read through most of the "Savage FAQ" section on this forum. There you will find all the major information you will need to answer your "whats what" about Savage.

FWIW I would look for a rifle in 30-06 or 270 for your 6.5x55 Sweede. All you would need to do is swap out the barrel, everything else from there is your choice. Things like trigger, stock, scope mounts, etc. for upgrades.

Shilen is good, CBI is great, anything from Apache Gunworks is great.

Thanks for the barrel tips. Yes I've been searching GB for the -06 and .270 selections.

Does the age of the rifle matter for barrel swapping? I wondered if older models are problematic or not.

The barrel swapping will be the same, but I prefer the older rifles because the stagger feed actions are my favorite. Just stay away from the very first model of the 110. It has a wonky trigger and the bolt nose recesses into the barrel meaning that home barrel swappers are out of luck. Fortunately there are not many of the first model out there. Most here have not seen one.

Personally I prefer the Round rear rifles and Centerfeed if I can. I have some Staggerfeeds but I just find the centerfeed to be more reliable for me and the round rear recievers to be better when fitting scope bases. It seems to be more common to have base mounting issues with the flat rear receivers due to the flat area being more likely to be too high or too low.

As long as it is a post 1968 (IIRC, check me as I may be off a couple years on that) then no the barrel swapping is all the same. There are Shank size differences but 95% of all Savages are Small/Standard Shank and normally only the Target, RUM, WSM, and 375 Ruger based Actions are Large Shank. With a 30-06 or 270 it is 99.999% going to be a Small Shank.

I would buy a newer, Centerfeed, Top Release, Long Action rifle to keep things simple and easy for you, but that's JMHO.

I did a 6.5x55 Swede build that I finished in February, and just got out to shoot this past weekend. I found a 25-06, top release/centerfeed on the clearance rack at Cabela's (new old stock from 2007 with laminate stock, actually picked up the two they had) for an excellent price, and used that as my foundation. Couldn't be happier with the whole setup.

I've done builds on both the staggered and centerfeeds (with round backs), and they both get the job done nicely. I also prefer the round back, but the flat backs work great too.
