It's been talked about a few time on here. Not a good idea. You could (from what I've read) look at possibly a 338 Edge, 338 RUM, or 338 WM on a small shank.

Here are a couple threads to check out.

That's what I've gathered from the research I've done, but I'm far from an expert on the subject.

Yes, and the Edge outperforms the Lapua.

Several I know of have screwed in a small shank 338 Edge in a donor Savage Action, such as a 7mag is a donor. I am one of them.

Do it at your own risk. I mostly use 160 to 225 grn bullets in mine. 300grns bullets with 90+ grains of powder is potent, especially on your shoulder.

I don't think anyone would make you a small shank 338 Lapua barrel.

I've built several RUM and WARM based barrels on small shank actions. It works very well.

Anything larger is asking for problems and potential danger.

Savage uses oversized lugs on their factory .338 Lapua. I'd be concerned about the bolt lugs as well as the barrel holding up to the pressures and stresses associated with the .338 Lapua, .338 Edge or any similar cartridge. I'm just too **** good looking to take the chance of a bolt coming back into my face/eye. :-)

BINGO, we have a winner over there. I SAID winner, not weiner. lol
I know a guy who had a 30x378 on a 98 mauser also. The rum cases wouldnt fit a standard magnum face either if they werent rebated to fit 700s.
You can also rebate 378 weatherby cases but its still a dumb idea to put one on a 98 mauser.
It's not like 40 years ago, the proper parts are now available.

I've always felt that if you want to build 338LM and similar cartridges, a bigger action is required. The action should be designed and intended for those cartridges. The Remington 700, Savage 110, and similar actions weren't designed to handle those pressures. Proceed at your own risk.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

ya i just calculated it out and since force = Pressure* Area, with the same pressure, a Lapua would be exerting about 20% more force on the bolt face than an RUM cartridge dude to the larger surface area of the rim of the lapua ( i stayed at a holliday inn last night)
