E.R. Shaw Barrels- Good or Bad????

I'm looking at a buying a new varmint barrel. Have any of you guys had any experience with E.R. Shaw barrels? Am I wasting my money or not?
    Thanks

Ditto for mine. May not be able to win a benchrest match with them but for everyday shooting they are more than good enough. I have one in 338 win mag and it shoots 1/2"-3/4" groups consistantly.

What kind of barrel are you looking for and how much are you looking to spend?

Looking at 26" 30-06 cal. but they don't show the twist rate of 1-11 for the 30-06. I may go to Mcgowen instead, prefer a longer barrel also than what E.R. Shaw offers. I emailed McGowen for a price with shipping to my door and I have had no response.

The best source for McGowen barrels is Northlander -- who uses this forum a lot.

Northlander can get anything from McGowen or Shilen at better prices and quicker times than any one working individually.

Most of us, and V.H.A. all agree that Shaw makes perfectly fine barrels.
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.

Shaw will make a 26" for you if that's what you're looking for. Unfortunately that is the longest they make.

    Shaw makes good carbine barrels.

Why would you want a 1:11" twist?

Unless you are shooting a 220 round nose or bigger(longer) bullet then a 1 in 11 or 12 twist is just fine especially if you are shooting 200 to 300 yard bench matches.

There is no doubt that slow twist work and work well within their appropriate bullet range. It is proven at match after match.

That being said... I also enjoy fast twist barrels too. Try a 6-inch twist barrel sometime. Then get you some bullets that look like #2 pencils like you used in grade school. Drive them bullets through umpteen inches of rough oak boards. Yes, don't get attacked by oak boards or trees that often, but one should always be ready. Some people don't keep a 375 H&H with 400-grainers leaning against the back door either -- just in case.

I always thought that a 1:10" twist was a good rate for 30 caliber bores. At least for most applications anyway.

Got one two weeks ago in 7mm Magnum. Had it made in CM 24" in Savage magnum contour. First I was impressed with the finish of the barrel on the outside. After breaking the barrel in I am impressed with the finish inside. Shoots good and cleans up really well.

Re: E.R. Shaw Barrels- Good or Bad????

I just got my new 6.5 Creedmoor that I've been waiting for for 5 months and I gotta say she's a shooter. Its a standard Savage varmint contour 26" and with 20 rounds down the tube she was shooting bug holes at 100. It does seem to like 2750 fps more than 2850. So I guess I'll have to live with sub 2800. Very good finish, good crown and a excellent chamber. The leade is not overly long so I can go .020 off the lands and still fit rounds in my AICS mag, using my DBM on a 10FLP.

Seems to me that the only bad thing about them is the wait time. It took a good 4 months to get the barrel I ordered from them. But it is a good one indeed.
