    Thumbs Up 6.5 SAUM build

Hey guys I want to build a Savage rifle in 6.5 RSAUM, so can I do this with a standard short action or do I need to use a WSM action with the larger barrel nut ?

    Thanks

It can be done with either a small or large shank action.

Keep us updated on your build! I was thinking of a 6.5 Rem Mag but a 6.5 SAUM sounds good too.

If you can get a wsm action it will save you from buying a new bolt face and magazine.

I asked because I already have several SA's and didn't want to buy a WSM action. All I need is 1 WSM magazine. I have a WSM bolt already and HS varmint stock. It will be a 4 month wait for the custom McGowen barrel.

ALPHA Pigmy checkout GA precision long range hunter and snipershide, soon George will have factory brass for 6.5 SAUM.

If you have a WSM push feed bolt head, you will need a WSM firing pin for the conversion. If you have an entire WSM Bolt assembly then you are good to go as long as it is a push-feed type.

Small shank works just fine, I built my 6-WSM on a small shank and have had no ill effects.

Thanks I got the WSM bolt assembly with wsm firing pin from midway. Just settling in for the barrel wait.

Here is another question for you guys which I know nothing about because I don't reload. I need to buy the chamber reamer for this barrel, which one do I need the turn neck or the NO neck turn ??

I usually get no turn neck chambers done. It is just easier for me. Someone may come along with a better answer.

Google "care and feeding of a GAP 6.5 SAUM" and you will find a good tutorial on the brass preparation. I used the PTG GAP 4S reamer with the .296" neck and a K&M neck turning tool to turn the necks and it does an excellent job.

Cut it out! I've got to fund my IRA before I can do another build, and you're not helping!

How is the 6.5 saum project coming. I have 2 of them in the works. I could not find the elusive short action left hand push feed magnum bolt heads so i am having PT&G build me a couple. Dont know when they will get around to making them as they have already delayed the order once. the barreled actions are at manners right now getting fitted and inletted for accurate-mag bottom metal. One will be in a t4 and the other in the new eh1 hunting stock. hopefully it will all come together soon.

I just received the reamer yesterday, it will be at McGowen barrels on Friday, then it's just a short 8-12 week wait for the barrel.

Brothers of the Barrel Nut rejoice.

I just finished one, it's a bit of a "parts gun" out of stuff that was laying around. The barrel is a 260 LRP with the chamber lopped off and rethreaded and chambered to 6.5 SAUM, it's the GAP neck turn reamer. It uses a magnum bolt head trimmed down to fit, I made the stock and muzzle brake for it. It feeds really well from a 10 round AI 308 mag with the lips opened up a touch. I ran into a small ejector issue first time out but it everything else seems to be ok. I've got some properly formed brass now so it'll be interesting to give it a proper run.

I'll post up a new thread so I don't derail this one. This is looking to be a great cartridge though.
