Savage 12 LRP 6.5 long range shooting

Just got back from my cousins hay field and it stretches to 550 yards. Had an 8" steel target and at least a 10 mph crosswind. I could not believe how easy it was to ring it. I have shot a 308 for a while and it was tough with it, but it wasnt a Savage. The LRP 6.5 made it easy. I was ringing every time with the vortex PST 6-24x50 just about. Out of thirty rounds from 300 to 550, with only two shots at 300, I only missed twice at 550 and I believe that was wind because it was up and down. I used "bullet drop" ballistic calculator and handloaded 140 amax 41.5 IMR 4350 at 2.81 OAL. I will be moving to a longer range sooner than I expected.

    Awesome!

I use the same load but with H4350. What is your velocity?

I dont have a chrono kingzero. Working on that. I know by my ballistic calculator and working backwards that i am a little slower than their posted 2700. On my scope I have to set the mrads 1/10 above where it calls for it at 2700.
Things would be alot easier with a chrono. you dont have an extra one do you? Just kidding.
I just want an accurate load that is repeatable and I know where it shoots. That seems to be the case with these. I have never shot that good with any rifle/scope combo and I have shot a truckload of em.

I don't have a chrono and you don't need one either. I don't use "bullet drop" but I would assume it has a velocity correction feature like "shooter" (what I use).

You simply guess your velocity and input it into the calculator with all the other necessary data. Then shoot just like you did at 300 and 550 using the drops it gave you. Then dial in till your hitting point of aim on the target and record the elevation you used at both distances.

(For instance, if bullet drop told you 2 MOA for 300 and 9.2 MOA for 550 but you had to dial to 2.4 and 9.8 to hit point of aim.)

You plug this data into the velocity correction feature (assuming bullet drop has one) and it will give you a corrected "true" velocity. It is better to do 3 distances like 300, 500 and 700 but this will get you started.

I guessed 2800fps and it gave me a corrected velocity of 2740fps. So far I have only taken it to 660 yards but it was spot on for elevation.

I plan on doing the same by looking at my log book and trying different speeds until i get it to match. I cant back figure like on the shooter app but it will work. I already know from guesstimating that it is between 2650 and 2700. I may need to look into shooter but I got hits first round all the way out to 500 with bullet drop and just clicked up to get center mass. I missed first two at 550 on 8" target but that was wind call. When I corrected that i hit dead center.

Whatever works for you. All that matters is hearing that steel ring back.

Shooter is a great app if you decide to shop for another one.

Thanks kingzero. The only reason I used it was because it is free. I like spending my money on powder and bullets! Guess thats why I dont have a chrono!
