    Headspacing Bolt Resistance Question

I had everything put together then decided to remove the barrel and nut again and do it over. My question is should there be any resistance at all when closing the bolt on a go gauge? When I first set the head space, I used the go gauge and made sure there was no resistance when opening or closing the bolt. However, I wanted to make absolutely certain so here I am doing it over again.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

No. Once the nut is snugged the bolt close the same as if it were closing on an empty chamber. A Go is used to set or check a chamber is equal to or greater than its length, a No Go, less that it's length.

Using the 308 Win family for example, the Go measures 1.630", the No Go, 1.634" which means a chamber length would be equal to or greater than 1.630" but something less than 1.634", 1.633 or less.

A perfect example. Jump to 1:41

Bill, thanks for the information! I think I have the piece of mind needed to finish this thing once and for all.

    The head spacing is complete..

The bolt closes fine with a go gauge.
Does not close or begin to close with a no go gauge and a go gauge with a piece of clear packing tape on the end.

    Thanks,
