.3 gr difference between low and max

Does this seem odd for a powder for small cartridge size?

    Hodgdon Powder Lil'Gun Bullet Diameter .172" C.O.L. 1.715" Starting Load Grains 9.7 Velocity (ft/s) 3,538 Pressure 44,600 PSI Maximum Load Grains 10.0 Velocity (ft/s) 3,629 Pressure 48,200 PSI

A .01 jump in powder charge will show pressure signs like you wouldn't believe. Small case capacity is the cause.
Oz never gave nothing to the Tin Man, that he didn't already have.

Well....I load for the .17 Hornet and I do stick to the lower side. But I will say that for the distances that I stick too....200 yards, the little bullet will knock 'em dead.

    FWIW

But if look at the 22 hornet, the low and high start has a 1 gr of play. But the 17 hornet only has a .3 gr play (this is for lilgun for both caliber). Also the 22 hornet has way heavier grain lead and still listed for a higher charge than the 17 hornet. 22 hornet 35 to 55 gr bullet and it has the same charge weight for them all 12 to 13 gr start and finish. Except the 53 gr which is 11 to 12 gr.

I thought the 22 and 17 had the same case other than the neck size.

Leo, right now I'm using H-110 and H-335. That's because I have 'em. I was load developing prior to the fall 2013 hunting season....and once hunting season begins...my life tends to revolve around what's in and what tag to I still have. But...I just looked at my spreadsheet and for the average six shot "group" shooting a 20gr. berger over 12.5 of H-335 was 3086fps with a STD deviation of 45pfs, and shooting a 20gr Nosler Varmagettin over 9.0gr. of H-110 (again, a 6 shot average) was 3268fps with a STD deviation of 95fps.

But....to answer your question of am I using L'il Gun? No. :)

actualy the 17 is an improved version with a real shoulder, I think the case capacity is higher on the 17. the smaller bore will cause higher pressures with the same powder charge.

I think (and at times....if you read my post....thinking can become a difficult item for me!!!) Ranger is right. If you actually did a water capacity on both, I believe the .17 would hold more. But again, as Ranger stated....it's pushing a smaller projectile down a tiny hole which will increase pressure. It's always something!!
