Whats involved with building a nice custom Mauser

For some reason for quite a while now I have wanted to build a custom Mauser 98 from scratch for some reason.
I know its supposed to be tedious, trigger, bent bolt, drill and tap for scope, custom fit and finish reamed barrel, true and square, bluing etc.

Anybody here done one ??
Sounds expensive.

I've had a couple,and while they are nice they arn't worth the price,or the hassle,If you like the custom 98s action,and extractor you are better of buying a Ruger 77 in your choice of calibres ..If you do ever build one you better keep it forever because you can't get a fraction of your investement back if you ever want to get rid of it...The ones selling around here with cheap A&B barrels are 250 dollar guns,and the people that try to sell the ones with Douglass barrels can't get anyone to buy them because nobody wants to pay their price...That's a logical opionion.....But most hobbies cost money,and if it's something you think you would enjoy go for it .You only live once.

The bolt handle is the worst part of the build. You can do one of three things, buy a bolt with an already bent handle, cut off the existing handle and either weld on a bent replacement which requires a heat sink to properly do without ruining the bolt, or cut off the bolt handle - thread and tap the bolt body for a bolt on bolt handle which to me looks tacky. Like Hillbilly said, you better plan on keeping that one for life as you'll never get your money back out of it.

After thinking about it a bit, I would rather have a 8mm carbine mauser like a vz.33 and keep it stock or a K31 Swiss.
I dont need either - LOL.

I've got 2 Mausers in my collection. A Yugo M48 and a Styer M95 carbine. They're both great shooting rifles and have no need for glass on them. Be careful when you buy a used Mauser that the bolt serial number matches the receiver number. I bought several Turk 8mm Mausers and discovered that none of them had matching numbers and only 1 out of 5 would go bang every time. The others had head spacing issues and would misfire.

Well it looks like a VZ.33 might be out of reach for a nice one.
Too rare so maybe a K31.

Yeah I just was looking at that.

Too many projects though.
Waiting on a 22" Savage 9.3x62 bbl.
Waiting on a 358 Gremlin bbl for my Ar15.
Need to ream my 223 target rifle so I can go ahead and load it up with some 90 gr bergers and get that thing out to the range.
Just set up a DFA75 and have yet to use it in the field.

Maybe I should get one to hold me over until I get the others running.

You might want to take into consideration the cost of ammo for it. My Steyr is costing me $1 to $1.50 per round when I can find good deals.
