I have a 111 FXP3 30-06 that is shooting about a 10" group at 200 yards no matter what factory or hand load I've tried. Actually it's not a group, I seem to shoot all around the bullseye in a 10" circle. Now I did replace the factory stock with a model 114 solid wood sock from Numrich, should I try again with the factory synthetic stock and see if accuracy improves or is this the best I can expect from this barrel. I never shot it before I changed the stock. Not sure if that is the problem or what. Scope is a Nikon Monarch 3x9 and set up tight.
Now it could be that I'm just a bad shot but I usually get some kind of groups, even on a bad day.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What kind/type of mount and rings do you have? If all of the above doesnt work, try having the barrel/lug/nut reset/retorqued. It probably isn't the scope. Also not so imply what-so-ever you can't shoot, but have you let someone else shoot a group for comparison?

Check to make sure the tang and barrel are free floated. Check the crown maybe. Try different ammo ?
Is this a new gun?
Factory base? if no, check if front base screw is binding, tighten everything down, switch scope

My kids 308 Axis's both do that with hot heavy loads even 180gr /3050 fps.powerpoint factory ammo. The 165gr 2600 fps federals yield tight groups. If everything else checks out might be worth some experimenting.
180gr/3050fps from a .308 Axis? That's beyond hot. That's .300 WinMag levels.

The easiest thing to do is put the synthetic stock back on and try it again. I was wondering if the wood stock needs some final fitting in the area of the reciever or should it be ready to bolt on? Either way I'm not ready to give up on it but with the weather we are getting now it will be a least a week before I can get back to the range.

Well, that rules out sending it back to the factory. I think you should try a few more different loads in it, maybe with a different shooter and even a different scope. You should be getting a lot better than 10" at 200 yds. You have a major issue. My best guesses would be the scope/rings/mounts, or the barrel.
Are you sure about the year of manufacture ? I may be mistaken but it looks like an older model than that.
Like I said, I'm not ready to give up on it yet. It could be that I just need more practice. There was a guy next to me at that range one day and he was shooting the same gun but with the Accu-trigger and he was getting 2" groups with 180gr Winchesters.
I'll go ahead a swap the stock, check scope and rings and back-up to 100yds and go from there.
I call Savage with serial# and that's what they told me. It's G2811xx
2" would be more like it. Not to offend, but next time have someone who's a known good shooter try it too.
None taken, I never claimed to be a sharp shooter but I can do a lot better with a Marlin 30-30 at 200yds so I'm pretty sure something is not right with this gun. I just have to work on it.
Max load Hornaday 9th edition 180 gr. 2400fps Lyman 49th edition 180gr. 2550fps Speer reloading manual #14 180gr. 2655. The song went: " Momma you are to hot to handle".
Well the factory stock put me back on target, I guess those folks up in Westfield MA know what they are doing.
I put the synthetic stock back on and made a few shots at 100yds with Fusion 150's, a slight wind-age adjustment, and all is good dead center about 2" high. Went out to 200yds and shot two nice 3-4" groups. I switched to Winchester 180's , the same ammo I was shooting last week, and got several nice 2-3" groups about 4" lower then the 150s. Not bad for 20 degrees out and me half dead from trudging 200 yards in 18 inches of snow the put the targets out.
I actually like the feel of the original stock better. Now I need to take both stocks back up there a figure out why it wouldn't shoot with the wooden one. Or just put the wood stock on e-bay.

I am not an expert, but been reading quite a while. Was the tang floated in the wood stock? I read something about tang not being floated will cause accuracy problems.
I don't know, I'll post some pics of the two stocks side by side if anyone is interested. At this time I'm happy with this gun the way it is shooting now.
I would be interested to see the difference between the two. If you get a chance to post of pic of the two, that would be great !!
