I'll give it a try with an old case.

I got mine at ENCO tools online a while back. WWW.USE-ENCO.com. model number 891-4932, 5/16-36 HSS HAND PLUG TAP. Cost me 12.21 plus shipping.

I had problems holding the shell without crushing it when drilling it. The bit kept spinning the case instead of drilling.

    Smokey262,

Have you figured out how to "hold" a case straight? I was looking for an easier way then hose claps, maybe not....

Hope you get some use out of it....

Only once so far. I tried it with an un-needed case. I trimmed the end so it was square to the head, the placed it upside down on the drillpress table and clamped it with the vise. I made sure that it was square on the table.

I drilled, chamfered, then began tapping. It worked OK but it was not perfect. Then I thought about it some, and came to the conclusion that it is OK if it is off a little bit.

I think the next experiment will be to fixture a case using a pair of split pieces of wood with a hole drilled through the split, and possibly using bedding compound to make it a perfect fit.

So a set up like a barrel vise might just be the answer....... I'll try it.

Tape handles are available at almost any hardware, auto supply, Sears, Lowes, Home Depot and etc. You can also use a "fits all" ( adjustable wrench) or 1/4" wrench as long as you start and keep the tap straight.
