Remington UMC vs Danish Surplus (AMA) 30.06

    Hi There

just got a new Savage 111 FCNS, took it to the range with a pack of Remington UMC (150 gr) and some surplus Danish 30.06.. the range was 100m (109 Yards)

Shooting first with the Remington UMC the POI was pretty bad...

First I thought it had something to do with the rifle, scope, bases etc..but I decided to to give the surplus a try, and it was shooting like this:

Changing back to the Remington UMC and the result was as in the first image...I did several double checks...

anybody seen this with their Savage in 30.06?

    Velkommen til forummet!
Any one particular rifle will shoot some factory ammo better than other ammo.
It seems as if your rifle simply prefers the combination of components found in the surplus cartridges.

Good to hear that you are allowed to buy surlus ammo in Denmark ! Hopefully it is cheaper than the UMC too... If so then you have a good ammo source. Do you have any restrictions regarding how much ammo you are allowed to own and how it is to be stored ?

My 111 FCNS '06 was the same way. Remington rounds were all over the place but Fusions went right on top of each other. It might calm down some as time goes on though. I've also heard they like heavier bullets but I haven't had the time lately to try any. But the 150's I shoot are plenty good enough.

    Tak for velkomsten.

I have tried to make a comparison of the two Remington to the left and the AMA to the right. The Rem UMC seems to be smaller...

Sure we can still find some surplus, but since it is 30.06 it is a bit hard to find these days and the price (at least for me) has been much lower than any other commercial ammo, ususally I use the AMA for some old school shooting with my U.S Model 1917 (Remington mfg).

By default I am allowed to have 500 rounds per weapon (if I need more I just have to change the permit). Storage of guns in an approved safe is mandatory. If I have more than 25 guns (or 10 very 'dangerous weapons' eg. semi's and pistols/revolvers) the safe needs to have a direct alarm to 'the police'...

Chris, those seem to be fairly modest regulations by European standards. Here in the US other than 223, it is getting harder to find good surplus ammo. The German DAG is gone, the Yugoslavian 7.62x39 and 8x57 Mauser is gone (a bit of corrosive 80's left with 1 vendor but at a pretty high price). Even steel case ammo of inferior quality in the 8x57 is now over $0.50/round. Anyone who reloads is going to be approaching those prices after a few reloads and that would be all non corrosive ammo of the highest quality.

Last year with the attempt by Congress to severly restrict gun rights there was a complete panic and all guns and ammo totally disapeared for most of the year. Even now, more than a year after the one shooting by the psycho kid in Conneticut, it is basically impossible to buy 22 magnum rimfire ammunition. I have not been able to get any in over a year. In fact I drove over an hour one way in the snowstorm we had on the weekend to "barter" with someone who had 250 rounds of 22WMR in 40 and 45gr. The same has been true of smokeless powder for reloading and primers. No idea how long it will be before this situation returns to normal. If we went to area 51 I swear we would find the government literally plowing all this stuff into the dirt so that all the new gun buyers can't get ammo to shoot with...

    Hi Guys

I changed the scope, as a friend of mine had a tactical Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x40 that used to sit on his Sako trg-42. Took it to the range with a handfull of my AMA 30-06 ammo, it came out pretty once I got the scope sighted in.. (even though the ground was cold). All at 100m & prone position.
