Mag Vs. Ultra Mag

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to buy a 7 mm mag. I'd like to be able to use it on everything from deer to black bear if I want. Is that reasonable or should I go for the ultra mag for dangerous game? Or get the 7mm mag for deer and other non violent animals and something completely different for dangerous game?

The 7MM Rem mag is more than enough for any deer or black bear on the planet. If you were planning on hunting dangerous game (grizzly, moose, African game) you may want to look into a 338 Ultra mag but even that is a lot of gun. Something like the 375 Ruger or H&H would work well too for the man killers.

while the black bear has claws, a .30-30 will handle them well. a 7 mag won't have a problem either.

Actually for black bear most any decent sized cartridge, 30-06 etc.

338-06 would be better for bear.
Good hog round too.
You can shoot from 160 gr up tp 300 grainers.

30-06 you can shoot from 110 gr up to 250 grainers if you have the twist.

For the big and nasty stuff, I agree with above and go for a 375 ruger or better yet a 416 ruger.

For dangerous game I would take something like the 444 or the 45-70. Thats me though

you dont get much more power then the output of a .300 ultra mag or .30-378 unless you go up to a .338 lapua or .50 caliber

Unless you reload, I would suggest going with a 7-08 instead. (Actually, I would suggest you go with a .308 but there is just something magical to some people about a 7 mm.) Longer barrel life, mild recoil, kills deer and black bear, and that's all you need. Why use a sledgehammer to drive 16 penny nails?

7mm Mag is perfect gun based on your needs............

Sigh. Just get a .30-06. It will kick you just about as hard as a 7 mag but will be cheaper to feed.

The old 30-30 probably takes more deer and black bear each year then all the rest combined. The only thing it takes is shot placement. What it gives you back is not having a shoulder so abused by age 60 that you can only handle recoil from a 22RF.

Plus it is a lot cheaper to reload as a cast lead bullet only costs about .06 each and DEAD IS DEAD

i have a 7mag it will work great have use one for years but if they had 7wsm back then i would go to that one wsm will out run the 7mag

If you can't kill it with a 160 grn 7mm bullet at 3K MV, don't go looking for it.

Did deer and black bear get tougher over the last few years? Why all the big rounds? A 7mm Rem Mag is more than enough and I would feel just fine using a 7-08 or .308. They have always seemed to work in the past? How big a black bear we talking here?

northern mn a good black bear is 300+ .Maybe over kill but when shootin mulies at a distance why not have the knock down power out at 300-400 is all im sayin
