    1895 Savage 303

A new to me rifle. Ser # is 7716 and a little rough. The barrel has been cut to 16" A new front sight was dovetailed in. All seems to work OK. I'm having trouble getting the butt plate screw out to get into it for some clean & lube.

How common was it to trim barrels back like this?

I own over a dozen 1895's and have seen countless others and have only ran into 2 that were cut.

It's sad to see an old girl like that with chunks of wood out of her and barrels being cut, but they were actually used to kill animals back in the day so they didn't get real well taken care of either.

Spend the money and get it lettered, it's kinda cool to know when it got shipped and who and where it went to.
