243 win. 105 gr vld vs 95gr vld vs 105 amax?

I like the 95 grain VLD It seems to provide the best of everything for me. The 105 Amax also shot well 39.0 grains of H4350 for the 105 and 42.5 grains for the 95.

The Amax will probably be a bit less fussy regarding cartridge OAL / distance to the lands.

I have an ackley chamber so my load data will not transfer. I use 41gr of H100V for my fireforming load with the 95gr VLD's and they shoot 1/2 MOA with that. I did get a LOT of brass so it will take me a while (hunting anyway) before I have a nice big batch to work up full strength loads with the 95's and 105's. I have certainly found that the 105's are a LOT more fussy regarding jump than the 95gr or maybe I was just lucky....

Thanks guys, how about on game preformance? Mostly coyotes, but maybe an antelope or a deer once in a while. And I have noticed in my 6.5x284 that bergers can be very picky how far off the lands they wanted to be.

For game, like deer, I have always had great luck with 100g Nosler Partitions...the best powder for me in this cal has always been a batch of 50 year old Military Surplus powder I got from my grandfather that's about to be gone...he also uses the 100g Partitions as his go to bullet in .243...

I have never found the bergers to be overly picky in anything of mine. Seating them .025" from the lands has always been the sweet spot for me. I really like the way the bergers perform on game. I have never killed anything but paper with my 243 but I have killed lots of things with 25s 6.5s and 270s and I'm sure the 243 would work just as well.

A 95gr Berger wil be devastating on a coyote. I switched my factory barrel for the Shilen just after killing the last 2 coyotes I had a shot at. Back then I was shooting the 95gr Superformance SST load. The first coyote was hit just in front of the shoulder at 135 yards and had a 2" exit wound and everything between the ribs was liquified. It left a blood trail (from the drag) 1/4 mile back to the barn and then another big pool in the back of my truck. The bullet, after exiting, struck some brush behind the coyote and spooked out the second one which I had not seen previously. He stopped with his tail pointed at me, so I put another 95gr SST into the base of the tail, which split about half his vertebre open. That bullet did not exit. The 95gr Berger has a better BC than the SST and also appears to fragment after entering, so I would expect similar results.

The best group ever shot with my 243 was with 95gr VLDs. Just over a quarter inch. I seat mine about .025" off the lands as well.

I have good luck with 95 gr nosler ballistic tips .025 off the lands. 40.0 gr IMR-4350 gives me 2980 fps & 3/8 groups at 100 yds.

Shot 3 through chrono, 2996, 3011, 3005. It's by far the most accurate load I have ever seen in a hunting rifle
