    If there is a military Surplus Store nearby;I would suggest the military training manual
    FM 21-26 Land navigation and Map Reading
    FM 3-25.26
    You could also look at a Boy Scout manual I think either one of these would get'em going. and a decent compass.cost about $10-15

    Go to your local Boy Scout store or council office and pick up a copy of the "Orienteering" merit badge booklet.
