6mm Remington......

I am looking for opinions on the 6mm Rem. As far as accuracy, velocity, barrel life, brass availability and cost, and just general comparisons to 243 and other 6mm rounds. Are there any benefits to it?

The 6mm Remington is one of my favorite cartridges.

Have used the 6mm Remington on prairie dogs.

With 75-grain Hornady bullets does fine.

I get .5@100 out of my 17" striker barrel when I have a good day. bad day it still is under 1".
I also have a .243, .243AI & 6mm AI and a couple 6BRs.
I have stronger good feelings for the 6 Rem over the others with no good reason. :) none of then are totally dialed in.

have own a Rem 6mm since the late 1950's.

My primary deer rifle is a Ruger #1 (semi-custom), in the Rem 6mm. have shot over 75 deer with it, using Barnes X’s. Have 1600+ rounds thru it, & if I do my part, it will put three shots in less than ½ inch all day long. Some times better.

Shoots hornady 75 gr. V- maxs great.

Bought a Rem 6mm varmint contour for my VLP, from Jim ( Northlander) & I’m very happy with it, shooting the 75 gr. V-maxes, & 105 gr. A-maxes. It shoots exceptionally well also.

Back during the last Ice Age I bought my first custom barrel for my 03A4 Springfield. It was a 26" Apex .244 Remington. The gunsmith talked me into getting a 1/10 twist to stabilize 100 grainers. The winds out in the Southern California desert were a constant factor. The following year Remington dropped the .244, changed the twist to 1/10 and renamed it the 6mm Remington.

So, I guess I had one before there was one. It is/was a great cartridge and that was a great rifle.

I guess I should have clarified about the 244/6mm, for a few of the younger shooters.

the difference between the 244 & Rem 6mm is only the twist of the barrel. the case is the same.

as "UJ" explained the 244 initially was a 1:12 twist. the rag gun writers at that time got hung up on 10 gr. of bullet wt. , & decided the 244 couldn't shoot 100 gr. bullets, of what every kind they were using. I shot some Speer that were over 90 gr. & they shot just fine.

The damage was done, as the marketing gun rag writers of that time use to copy cat writing, & proclaimed it not suitable for deer size game because of 10 gr. of bullet wt.

my opinion, (I know what opinions are, every one has one) the Rem 6mm is a better design cartridge with the longer neck. also, as far as I know,or ever heard, the Rem 244/6mm has never experienced the "pressure spikes" that have been documented with the 243, or Rem 7mm Mag.


As I have stated, in my opinion, it's a good 6mm case.

I have to agree with chestsprings....I never met a deer that knew the difference between a 90grn or a 100 grn bullet.

I still have my first centerfire rifle, Remington 700 BDL 6mm. I don't remember it ever shooting a group worse than 1" with anything that I have ever put in it from 55gr. Nosler BTs to 105gr. Hornady AMaxes. The long neck is excellent for heavy bullets.
