Send to Savage or gunsmith?

The threads in the forward most scope mount hole on the receiver of my new Precision Carbine are in bad shape. I've pulled shavings out with a toothpick, but still can't really see the threads in it. Should I send it to Savage, or just take it to a local gunsmith? None of the bolts that came with my DNZ Game Reaper mount will even start to thread in it, but easily start and screw into the other three. Thanks.

Try using some non-chlorinated spray brake cleaner with the little straw and a dental pick to clean it out before you give up on doing it yourself.

Call Savage and see what they will do for you. If its a new gun I would hope they would take care of it.

If they won't, you could always spin off the barrel and chase the threads and see if that will repair them. It just depends on how bad they are.

Otherwise a gunsmith is your other option, but I would call Savage before going any other route.

I would send it back to Savage, I have seen this before, they either cross threaded the screw, or tightened it up against the barrel, and ripped the threads out.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will call them and send it in before messing with it too much. I'd hate for them to say that it looks like I cross threaded or stripped it out. This sucks! I've really been looking forward to shooting it, and just got my scope and mount in the mail.

Are there supposed to be plugs/screws in the holes to begin with?

No there is not anything in the holes from the factory. I have had to fix them before on the front one I usually pull the barrel to fix since a bottom tap is a pain.

I just got off the phone with Savage and they told me that I can send it to them, or take it to a gunsmith, and call them so they can pay the gunsmith charges.

I guess I'll take it somewhere tomorrow and let them look at it.

good luck, at least if you have a near by smith you can get it quick and get out shooting.
