can someone give me the scoop on the model 116?

    Hi guys!

I'm looking at picking up a gently used Savage 116, stainless steel action/barrel in the wood stock. It is pre-Acutrigger and Acustock, so I think it must be around 10 years or so old. It is chambered in 30-06 caliber. I'm wondering what part the 116 plays in Savage's line-up; is it inteneded to be the entry level bolt action, or more of a higher end model? Also, are there good aftermarket stocks for this model, where i can swap out the existing factory wood set-up, for something else?

    thanks for any input!

Looks like after a bit of digging, the B&C Duramaxx long-action stock is perfect for these, and I put one on order.

I did see a post somewhere where the 116 denotes stainless finish, although i don't know where it fits into Savage's line-up. Regardless, I'm taking a shot (no pun intended) with a pre-acutrigger 116 30-06, with 22" ported barrel. This will be my first bolt action, so it should make for some fun shooting once i get it scoped.

The model 16 and 116 are Savages stainless version of a hunting rifle. Being called a weather warrior due to its resistance to rusting, it comes with a stainless barreled action and a synthetic stock(yours being wood could be cause it is an older model, or someone swapped it out)

As far as Savages complete line-up for sporter barrel rifles, I'd say that it is second from the top, with the model 14/114 Classics being the nicest. With the 16/116 being their line of stainless sporters they can almost be put in a class of their own in that respect though.

You dont see hardly any of them with a ported barrel though, but this is the second one tonight I have talked about. The other one was a blued gun though.

Dont know what youre payin for it, but if youre satisfied thats all that matters.

The Duramax stocks are very nice stocks and look really good. The only thing with putting on a sporter gun is that it has a varmint contour barrel channel. So it will be easily free-floated. They make a "Carbelite" series for sporter models but they are more money. Most people go with the Duramax. me included...

I just bought pretty much the same gun you're looking at, so I say go for it if you like it.

thanks for the info! I'm looking forward to some range time. I had a bit of concern regarding the Duramaxx stock and this particular barrel, so hopefully it won't look too goofy with much of a gap; but for $90 from Stocky's, I figured it was worth a try.

here are the pictures of the actual gun I purchased, which i paid $330 for.

I like the light color of your stock. blue guns tend to get darker wood.
